    My wish for ISU BB

I can't wait till we field a team of players that buy into the coaching staff as opposed to players that think they know more than the coaching staff. I've seen enough of the inmates running the asylum to last a life time.

I don't know why WJ is leaving, but it apparently has something to do with the coaching. If WJ's reason for leaving is that he didn't think he was being coached properly then I'm not going to lose too much sleep over his exit.

I want players who will come in and work their tails off to get better. And in the end, if Mac keeps getting kids to buy into his system then i think it will work. The only problem is that less and less kids want to play this style and are all about themselves

It's easy to know better than a coach when you don't have to do their job. Same thing @ work. It's easy to criticize a supervisor when you don't have to look at things from their point of view.

McD does better with guys that have been told they are not good enough to play at the big schools. When guys are told their whole lives how great they are, they want to go to somewhere they can shine.

That might work at a smaller conference like the mvc. And despite what u say the big 12 is superior to the mvc. Mcdermott just needs to keep getting guys who are big time recruits like brackins. I dont know how he's gonna get him but he'd better pull something out of his arse or pollard will can him after next year

Here's a thought...maybe McDermott's "system" isn't cut out for major conference MBB, and kids don't want to play in a system that they don't think will work.

This is my personal observation...For the most part, the top teams in the Big 12 and in the major conferences across the country don't recruit kids that "fit" a rigid system. They recruit athletes and develop a system around the abilities of the kids. The teams that win in the Big 12 are athletic, and they exploit the strengths of the kids. They aren't "system" teams.

My wish for ISU MBB is that McDermott will scrap his "system", start recruiting the best athletes he can get, and design a system that works around the talents of the kids.

Re: My wish for ISU BB

My wish for myself would be to have some idea what McD's "system" is or looks like. Every once in a while, I saw a nice pass and a sweet-looking play in between all the standing around. I imagine if we had a point guard like Tinsley who could get the ball to the right guy, McD's offense would look a lot better. I wish we could be a more up-tempo team, but the last two years I haven't seen one guy who could make a pass up court that was longer than 15 feet without it being picked off. We haven't been a good passing team.

My wish for the program would be that there would be 4-5 really good players in the state of Iowa every year and we could get 3 or more of them and they really wanted to come here because they had watched the Cyclones growing up or their families were Cyclones. We'd know they wanted to come and stay through thick or thin. We wouldn't have to depend on finding "diamonds in the rough" who chose us because we were their last best option.

This where I'm at!! Not at all sure what his 'system' is. At some point, I would like to see a motion offense of some sort.
I REALLY hope he's not trying to teach these kids 400 plays (or whatever the number is) as some have rumored.

And I think that's exactly what Licklighter is going to find out in pukeye country. System ball doesn't necessarily equate to success in major conferences. Unless your "system" is to throw the ball out there and let the guys create and play with their athleticism.

Re: My wish for ISU BB

Watching all teams in the late rounds of the NCAA tournament, it seemed like the common theme was every player on the floor could create his own shot. There didn't seem to be many set plays, other than pick and rolls.

There was a lot of isolation, guys taking someone off the dribble to create a shot or himself or draw the defense and then dish for the open 3.

You simply have to run, just to keep the other team honest.

GMac's system is built upon guys being in the system for a long time. Going into the third year, the only player who has been here for all 3 years is Alex Thompson. His system is not going to work if this trend continues.

If that is the case, it would also seem that such a system might not be well suited to the present era of college players heading off early to the NBA...
