    You have to love this......

Has anyone else noticed that on RIVALS.com through Cyclonereport they're discussing this athlete that both EIU and ISU have offered. Well if you read the description it states clearly
"The first two offers for Fort Myers (FLA) South Fort Meyers athlete Broderick Jenkins both came from the Cyclone State."

    Iowa State Cyclones Football: CycloneReport.com

How awesome is that, now Rivals is recognizing that this is the Cyclone state, gone are the days of the Hawkeye state.....that left with Hayden!!!!!

Just thought that was awesome to read.....

Technically, I believe that Iowa is supposed to be "The tall corn state" I'm not sure where everybody gets off using the hawkeye state. The cyclone state does sound better than the other two options.

Not terribly surprising since Paul Clark probably wrote or initiated the article--there's no sign of it over on the Hawk site.

Nice highlights, thought. The kid certainly can break through a crowd.

Iowa's most widely recognized nickname is The Hawkeye State, however it has nothing to do with the EIU Hawkeyes. Rather, EIU took their mascot name from the state nickname, which supposedly originated from the book The Last of the Mohicans.

Why would our state nickname come from the last of the Mohicans. That has nothing to do with the state of Iowa.

The Hawkeye State is a popular nickname for the state of Iowa and is said to have come from the scout, Hawkeye, in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, published in 1826. According to the Iowa State web site, "Two Iowa promoters from Burlington are believed to have popularized the name." The nickname was given approval by "territorial officials" in 1838, twelve years after the book was published and eight years before Iowa became a state.
The two men responsible for the promotion of this nickname are thought to be Judge David Rorer of Burlington and the newspaper publisher, James G. Edwards of Fort Madison and, later, Burlington. Burlington had been established in 1833 after the Black Hawk War of 1832. Mr. Edwards changed the name of his Burlington newspaper, The Iowa Patriot, to The Hawk-Eye and Iowa Patriot in tribute to his friend Chief Black Hawk. Rorer is said to have suggested "The Hawkeye State" after finding the name in The Last of the Mohicans while Edwards proposed the nickname "Hawk-eyes" in 1838 to "...rescue from oblivian [sic] a momento [sic], at least of the name of the old chief," Black Hawk.

While that isn't a credible source, it's enough to answer the question since I"m too lazy to look any harder.

Re: You have to love this......

Someone from EIU must have been smart back in 1847 (EIU founded), with the nickname already established, how better to gain recognition for your new school then copy the recognized nickname for the new territory....

Makes it funnier when people say this is the hawkeye state because it was the hawkeye state before the university of Iowa was even founded and way before they becomae a football POWERHOUSE.....too funny!!!!!

I stand corrected, thanks for the info. Still it's rather disapointing. Cyclone state just sounds much better.

I'm pretty sure that's how alot of big 10 teams got their nick name. Gopher state, Buckeye state, Badger state etc. Nicknames were already in place when the colleges were founded.
