Can ISU be both a basketball AND a football school?

Everyone knows the talk of late has been whether ISU could/should be a perennial football power in the Big XII. There's also been discussion about ISU being a football school as well. In my humble opinion, I think it's VERY difficult to be both a FB and BB school. Only the big $ schools around the country seem to pull it off (Michigan, Ohio St., Texas, Florida, LSU - I'm probably missing some). And some of these schools aren't always consistent with their dual success...

So, with ISU being a limited budget school, should expectations be tempered just a little when thinking about being BOTH a FB and BB school??

    Please prove me wrong...

How about we become one of them before we talk about being both of them at the same time...

I agree on all except Iowa. No one should ever confuse Iowa with a good basketball school. I'm glad Alford is still there.

But I will miss having Greg Brunner to yell at.

I think we should put all of our resources the next 5 years into basketball and build a powerhouse. Then once that is going at full speed. Start ramping the football program to get it to it's Max.

I would say at an underfunded school like ISU it's way easier to build a great basketball program. Ask UCONN

But all the revenue comes from the football program.

Conf Championships, big wins (and consistant wins) and 3 deep in NCAA's, I will pay 50 per game at hilton.... times how many home games? ... money can be made at BB .... you just have to be very good year in and year out. Which, I beleive we can be with GMac.

True a lot of Revenue does come from football. You have to realize though that not a lot of schools can get money from the womens basketball team also. So we have that advantage if the womens team does outstanding also. Plus if you pack hilton for every game it would bring in some nice money. Along with the new suites they are putting in Hilton .

Re: Can ISU be both a basketball AND a football school?

I think we have the track record to become a much better basketball school than a football school. I don't think that completely cuts out our FB program though. We just have to avoid years like this and 2003. Instead of the occasional crap year we need an occasional great year. Or at least as many Alamo Bowl births as winless Big XII years. A good FB program always means more money for the school. No matter what. There is just more money to generate there. ISU doesn't need to be a great football team. We just need to avoid being a bad football team and the money will come. No matter what, it's the failures that people remember. And we have too many failures in recent history. All we need is one good season, think about how much excitement 2000 put into this program, and we will be riding high again.

All this talk of Mac has only happened because we've had such a bad year. With another bad year only 2 years removed. Had he come out with some solid wins and a 7-5 season, he'd still be pretty high on everyone's chart. The detracters would have no ground to stand on if we had a winning season this year. A winning program is a winning program. You don't have to win them all. We aren't winning anything now.

    :Smart:

You must have gradiated from some college to talk all smart like that. Baby steps. I would much rather be a football school than a hoops school, but that is a personal opinion. I sure would be tickled to be either one.

And I don't care if you are IAA national champs every year, you aren't a football school.

I think that Iowa State needs to look for a National Championship in both Wrestling and Basketball. As far as football is concerned going to a bowl game once in awhile is all that fans can expect when you only spend seven million dollars on the football program.

Jamie Pollard said it all when he admitted that ISU was a basketball school.

We can be a low end Shrevepot football school and an NCAA basketball school under present circumstances.

Since when were we a basketball school? Ok, we've made the sweet 16 and elite 8 in the last 10 years. great. if I'm correct, i count only 5 appearances in the big dance out of the last 10 years. is that the performance of a basketball school? ask duke, north carolina, maryland, ucla, gonzaga, chreighton, so. ill, kansas, and syracuse. i think they've all made it at least 8 of the last 10 years. those are the true basketball schools.

i think under g-mac we can and will become a basketball school, but we're nowhere close yet

I HOPE your right because being known as a basketball school would NOT bother me at all, ISU might as well play to its strengths which are basketball and wrestling!

At Nebraska, football funds 85% of athletic department through, seats, shows, radio and television broadcasts, bowl revenues from league, large mandated donations to get proper seating, luxury boxes, concessions, parking, and whatever. Okie State received $160M from Boone Pickens for mostly football program and he threw in some stuff for other athletic programs.
