Impact of the Perceived Recession - Part 1

Pizza habits are changing with economy, says report

Posted by Judy Hevrdejs at 10:30 a.m. CDT
Blame a dicey economic outlook for changes in our pizza-eating habits, say the number crunchers at Technomic, Chicago-based food service consultants. Their just-released Pizza Consumer Trend Report says we're ordering less pizza during the week than we did in 2006 -- 35 percent vs. 29 percent these days, opting instead for pizza on the weekends in what appears to be a money-saving move. "Instead of going out for a sit-down meal during the weekend and ordering pizza for dinner during the week," says Technomic's Darren Tristano, "consumers are scaling back by having an affordable pizza meal on the weekend and preparing more weekday meals at home."
Technomic also weighed in on the matter of pizza sauce, finding more consumers in the Northeast favor sweet sauces (25 percent), topping those in the South (18 percent), the Midwest (17 percent) and West (13 percent).

I doubt it... I am eating less pizza because it is horrible for you. I think people are becoming better informed about what they are putting in their bodies.

It is kind of good to see. People should eat at home more.

We have to be in a recession, I hear how doom and gloom it is on the news every night.

Yeah, this study is simply correlative....could be any number of reasons why less pizza is being ordered.

Re: Effects of the recession - Part 1

Actually I've been doing this quite a while. When kid #3 came along, the cash flow seriously tightened up. I used to be a Subway regular during the work week, but in one year they went from being a $4.00 a meal place to like $7.50 for the same meal and I said enough was enough. It's been a couple years since I stepped foot in a Subway.

I pack cold lunches every day I'm on the road now. I enjoy cooking so it doesn't bother me to make a nice steak or sea food meal at home. True I miss the social apsect of eating out somewhat, but most of our close friends have young kids and don't eat out much more anyway.

It's easier and less expensive just to have friends over and make a nice meal(and that's something I learned 20 years ago from a European family I lived with.)

I have found it is a ton cheaper to go work out at lunch, and then eat at my desk afterwards. Even if you count $50 for a gym membership, you probably save $5-7 a day, so it only takes 2 weeks to recoup the gym membership.

How long do you get for lunch? I'd love to be able to do that but with only 40 minutes or so it's not very possible unless I want everybody to suffer from my stank all afternoon

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

1 hr, I can drive to the gym, work out hard for 30 min, and then hit the shower and make it back in about 58 min.

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs
