    Cyclone Scoring vs. Ranked Teams

    Take a look at this...

Lots of ways you can analize and look at this. While the average difference this year is (19) to ranked teams is about our average - I think it's fair to say most of the ranked teams we've faced this year were not at the same level as past years. Iowa has proved to not be all that good, and the same could be said for Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Should be an interesting discussion on this.

Re: Cyclone Scoring vs. Ranked Teams

Defense is 32 points in 2006 with a six year average of 34 points and offense is averaging 14 points a game in 2006 against 17 points over six years. Defense is doing better than average and the offense point production stinks even more. It's the oline and not the shoes.

2005 was a Nick leaders fluke.

Excellent point Bruceman. I had not looked at the data like that...but you are 100% correct.

We are giving up twice as many points as last season though and almost twice the points we gave up in '04.

Re: Cyclone Scoring vs. Ranked Teams

My thesis is if defense can cut down 50 yards a game, the offense would have more chances and gain 30-50 more yards and you could win games. Or visa versa.

It is all tied together in the point battle. And our nemesis has been Oklahoma.

And we have a hell of a long ways to go yet. We need another 12 years.

Re: Cyclone Scoring vs. Ranked Teams

We also played weak ranked teams the last two years. Iowa and Colorado both finished unranked, TCU was the only for real team we played in 2005. We played one ranked team in 2004, Iowa, and only lost by 7. Really skews those stats.

Re: Cyclone Scoring vs. Ranked Teams

You are correct Bryce, but it doesn't skew the stats. I broke out each year because of the difference in number and quality of ranked opponents for that reason - to see the difference between years like 2002 and 2004.

And as you can already tell, the rankings shown are the rankings the team had at the time we faced them.

I think you might want to change the 2005 TCU game difference to a red number, since we lost..

Thanks for catching that, I missed the Iowa game from '04 as well.

Re: Cyclone Scoring vs. Ranked Teams

Maybe we do not want to play any ranked opponents in the future. Bring on UNLV and the Rockets next year. Where is Army when we need them?
The next time we play Baylor and Okie State and A&M, they will probably be superior. We can almost chalk up three losses every year to the South and a split with Nebraska or Iowa (depends who plays in Ames) and two more road games in the North. Unless we take some chances or recruit Superman and Manhunter from Mars and Boy Wonder, we will be fairly well assured to lose six games a season. I think we need a makeover Extreme Edition.
