The difference between 7 and 8

Our records in football since 2000:
    2000: 9-3 (5-3)
    2001: 7-5 (4-4)
    2002: 7-7 (4-4)
    2003: 2-10 (0-8)
    2004: 7-5 (4-4)
    2005: 7-5 (4-4)
Now, imagine if the following four things had come out with different results.
    1. Oct 27, 2001 -- ISU makes two of four missed FGs and beats A&M
    2. Nov 23, 2002 -- Iowa State beats Connecticut at home on Senior Day
    3. Nov 27, 2004 -- Cyclones beat Missouri and win North division
    4. Nov 26, 2005 -- ISU beats Kansas and wins North Division

If this were all that changed, our records would look something like this:
    2000: 9-3 (5-3)
    2001: 8-4 (5-3)
    2002: 8-6 (4-4)
    2003: 2-10 (0-8)
    2004: 8-5* (5-3) North Champs
    2005: 8-5* (5-3) North Champs
    * Assume we lose the Big 12 championship
Obviously, lots of other things would change as well (better bowls, rankings, recruiting, etc.) but my point is that if only four games turned out differently, Dan probably wouldn't be on the hot seat right now (shoot-he probably wouldn't be on the hot seat if just #3 & #4 had turned out differently). This truly is a game of inches.

Question: Would this really be enough? Would the Cyclone crowd be OK with 8-win seasons and a couple of North titles? I think I would. At least I would have the hope that Dan can get us to the "next level" once in a while.

He'd still take some heat...but not near the heat he's taking now.

You really could have listed every single game in the '05 season too. And the CU game in '04.

Good post...I like the thought process.

If we would have won the Big 12 North the past two years.... we would not be having this discussion.

The problem is that in almost all of the games you listed... bad gameday coaching played a big part in those losses. I like Mac... hate the gameday coaching. Something has to give.

I think if ISU wins both these games McCarney's job would be safe for at least one more season. ISU would be the two-time defending Big 12 North champs and have been one game away from a BCS bowl game (assuming they would have lost in the Big 12 championship.) Unfortunately this isn't what happened and the reality is we lost to two teams we had no business losing to when there was so much on the line.

Your last line says it all. I was ok with the loss to mizzou in 2004. It was a real young team, they made some mistakes, but the future looked BRIGHT. 2005We backed our way into a possible B12N title and Dmac played that game like it was any other. (remember Blythe had maybe one recept in the 2nd half) AND with more than a minute left, he sat on the ball and waited for OT. Now in 2006, the team has no identity and we are seeing the aftermath of not playing to win when we had the opportunity.
Give Dmac credit. He made a good enough team to win at ISU, he just couldn't follow through with it.
