    King Corn

Anyone seen this documentary? Two guys from Boston move to Greene, Iowa to raise an acre of corn. It shows all the inputs that go into making corn, and a lot of the things that corn is used for. It also talks about how much corn is used to make high fructose corn syrup (sugar) that is put into sodas and lots of other foods, that may be contributing to America's obesity epidemic.

The trailer doesn't really seem this way, but the thing I liked about this movie is that it doesn't really push an agenda, it just tells it the way it is. There's some interviews with professors at ISU also.

I watched it about a week or so ago on PBS-HD, it was good.

I also liked the fact that it wasn't heavy handed in it's effort to push any sort of agenda.

Another thing I liked about it was how the whole town Greene, immediately knew who they were and what they were doing. They'd go into the store to get donuts or something, and everyone would ask them, "You get your acre of corn planted yet?" Funny, typical small farm town.

    Re: King Corn

I'm just finished Agron 392 this morning and we have discussed this movie several times. The movie is played on PBS every once in while. One of the biggest issues in the film is how little the outside world knows about corn production. The producer went to college at Iowa and thought all of the corn grown in Iowa was sweet corn. Education needs to increase about where food comes from.

As far as the high fructose corn syrup, I'll be honest, I don't care. All I really care about is yield and profits. I don't claim to be thin, cause I'm not, but obesity is all about work ethic. If you want to lose weight and be thin, work at it and do it. No one is forcing you to drink pop and eat 5,000 calories a day.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was very good. My only gripe was that the farm they were on used the ugly red tractors instead of the pretty green tractors. And a silver combine??? C'mon...

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

You have had my utmost respect until this post. Red tractors rule........

I do agree though about the hog feeders used as combines....

I used to work at the coop there in Greene. I hope they show it again because I would like to see that. Looks interesting. The link shows quite a few people that I know. Interesting.

Yeah, they show the co-op. They sell corn for $1.65 out of the back of their pick-up. It also shows the old co-op in Greene that was burned down.
