We could have competition in the coaching market...

if Mac ends up getting fired at the end of the year.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2643771

North Carolina is going to be looking for a new coach at the end of the year, and a lot of the big name coaches mentioned on here are also mentioned in that article.

Obviously the weather is going to be a little better at UNC, but talk about a school with NO history of winning football. At least there's been a bit of success here at ISU, plus the impending Jack Trice renovations if everything goes Pollard's way, that could entice a big-name coach.

If we lose out to UNC in attracting a coach, I think we'll be destined to be a mediocre team at best for a very long time.

I don't see Pollard making a move at coach enless he already has the canidate lined up. The McDermott hire shows that he had his ducks in a row as Morgan was released.

Just an FYI, Steve Kragthorpe was mentioned as a top candidate for that UNC job, but in a Tulsa paper, he stated he isn't interested in that job.

And UNC isn't going after Texas' Chizek either.

I would love Pollard to look at both those coaches.

UNC doesn't have much tradition, but they do have a great campus and the Carolina's/Virginia area produces a ton of D1 FB players. I could see a name coach turning that program around.

I also don't see ISU competing against UNC for a coach. They will likely go after a guy with an ACC/SEC pedigree, my guess is when ISU hires its next coach we will go after someone with a Big 12/Big 10 background.

What string of logic could possibly lead you to this conclusion?

I think he was already canned. John Bunting, correct? I believe he was fired 2-3 weeks ago by UNC.

It is a good point.....if both ISU on UNC were to offer the same coach the same contract, neither of the coaches having any ties to either school, and that coach choose UNC over ISU, I would think saying that we would be destined to be a mediocore team at best for a long time is a fair assesment.

I still think Loney would be a good candidate if we can't get anyone else and would be an upgrade over Mac.

Steve Kragthorpe is getting a lot of pub and has a good background.

And i think that is where the problem lies. I don't understand limiting a search to people from/that have experience in the the region. A good football coach is a good football coach, no matter where he is.

Re: We could have competition in the coaching market...

John L Smith just resigned (oh, fired then resigned) @Michigan State. The coaching carousel could get busy early. Frankly, all this "wait to end of season" stuff looks pretty futile. Some programs are making contacts now (MSU and UNC) and will be head of those "looking" around.
Anybody bet JP isn't making behind the scenes overtures to a few "insiders" and "outsiders" concerning ISU situation. Will a "not be back" next year and resignation be going down???
