    What should the Gophers do?

I'm a recent ISU grad who lives in the Twin Cities. For the past few years, I always thought the Cyclones and Gophers were in very similar situations...unable to win close games, can't compete with the big boys, go to mediocre bowls, everyone upset at head coach who just got another extension, problems with in-state recruiting, choke choke choke, etc.

This year I see no difference between the two programs. Both have been extremely disappointing. I've been listing to KFAN talk radio, and I'm hearing everything that I read on this board, word for word. People on KFAN are blaming Coach Mason for the Gopher's problems, because he's been the one constant for the past several years. They want a new coach for the same reasons we want a new coach. But other people are saying this is the best the Gopher's will get because of money, tradition, facilities, and they should be happy with mediocre seasons.

So what do you think the Gophers should do? Stick with the coach who has semi-consistently brought them to lower tier bowl games? Or take a chance on a new and possibly unproven coach?

Does your answer line up with what you think the Cyclones should do?

(Or do you not care because they're in the Big10? )

I care because noone should be subjected to the same crap we are. Now if it were Iowa with the same problems i would say who cares =)

Iowa State and Minnesota should consolidate football teams. *sarcasm*

well, in Minn. case, the AD extended the head coaches (mason) contract another 2 years.

They should hire McCarney, and JP should try to get them on our schedule in the next few years. They would fold like a house of cards in a wind storm, and we would have another "W." I am only kidding, but I would make a change if I were them.

Re: What should the Gophers do?

As a lifelong gopher fan and ISU alum, it pains me to see the standings and see my beloved cyclones and gophers in last place. If I was a head coach, there is no where I would rather coach then the University of Minnesota. No matter how bad you are, as long as you don't have a scandal, you won't get fired. Head Coach Glen Mason made an excuse for the record saying the program is still in the developmental stage. This is ridiculous. Mason has been the coach for a decade. In Mason's tenure at the U of MN, he has never beaten a big 10 team that finished first, second, or third. I think Mason is a considerablely worse coach then McCarney though. If McCarney had the U's athletic budget, didn't have a big brother like the hawkeyes, had huge recruiting opportunities in Minneapolis, plus South and North Dakota, plus a much larger alumni base, he would be winning twice as many games as Mason. Plus, it is a lot easier to recruit kids to Minneapolis then it is to Ames.

I hope the Gophs keep Mason around for at least another year. Same goes for Michigan St. and John L. Smith. That way, if Pollard pulls the trigger, he won't be competing for a new coach with many other big conference schools.

Well, having grown up in ND, I can tell you that while there are good HS FB players there, ND is not exactly a Div I recruiting Mecca. Also, with NDSU and SDSU now in div I-AA and UND planning to move to 1-AA, those schools will look significantly more attractive to the local kids.

As for a Big Brother for the Gophers, some Gopher fans I know talk as if the Hawks are their big brother. And given what happened a couple of weeks ago, the Bison kind of look like they might be willing to take that role on in a few years...

I would be fine with switching head coaches. KU fans would be pretty mad to see Glen Mason whipping their butts from the other sideline.

Re: What should the Gophers do?

Mason is doing the same thing he did at KU. Get a couple of wins to keep people happy for a while but never really breaking through. Meanwhile he'll be an arrogant jerk and alienate just about everybody before moving on (or being fired).

In fact, that might be the only difference between the two...people like Mac. Minny would be well-advised to dump Mason. He's not that great of a coach.

Speaking of Mason, I just read that he was an assistant at ISU in '75 and '76.

The gophers can't use "no tradition" as an argument. They have won national championships. Just because it wasn't in our lifetime doesn't make it go away. I don't see why they can't compete-only DI program in a state with 4 or so million population.

Re: What should the Gophers do?

I think Minnesota has another problem that we don't have as much in Iowa. People don't care about the gophers. A ton of my coworkers graduated from the U, they know less about the team than I do. On game day, it is hard to find the game on the radio in Mankato, 70 miles from the school. The market is completely dominated by the professional sports, and the gophers take a back seat. People just don't care up here.
