    Whaling

I had the good fortune to be on St. Lawerence Island last week when the village landed a whale. I thought that I would share a photo. For anyone that might be interested in more photos you can PM.

They go out in the sea in "skin boats." It is a very dangerous operation. I belive that it was last year that they lost a child that was thrown overboard while they were whaling. They got a lot of bad press for taking children out in their boats but its something that they have done forever.

    Re: Whaling

I am guessing many more whales are killed than people, so I don't feel too sorry for them.

How else are the kids going to learn?

I'm not being snarky; sometimes living with other cultures requires allowing them to do things we don't like; like killing whales and taking children out in skin boats.

I've seen some pics of extremely small Inuit children using extremely sharp knives. This freaked me out, greatly, but it's not my lane....

Thanks for the cool pics. You're probably setting the stage for my wife and my next episode of "wanderlust".

A whaling village typically lands just a couple of whales per year so the percentages aren't all that skewed.

But one whale will feed a village for nearly a year.

In that case, I retract my statement, even though taking kids out on the boat seems like a bad idea to me.

I once caught a fish this big.

I know, it's a mammal. Leave me alone.

You are probably referring to "ulu's." Eskimos never go anywhere without their ulu's.
