    Vacation ideas?

Anyone got a vacation hotspot they're willing to share? The wife and I are trying to find a nice little spot in the midwest for vacation this summer. We are driving, so would like it to be within 400-500 miles of Des Moines. We would love to find a cabin or cottage somewhere on a lake but we both are active and would like things to do that are close.

    We're not loaded, so about $100-200 a night. Preferably $100 .
The Cottage on Lake Galena looks very nice in Lancaster, WI but it's going for $290 a night!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There are literally thousands of cabins in Northern Minnesota, some of which can be cheap if you look around. It is truly beautiful there.

We take annual fishing trips to Big Winnie.
My wife and I also went to the Black Hills last year. I think we paid $75/night for a pretty nice hotel with a big waterslide that we used quite a bit. Plenty of hiking to be done in Custer on the trails and lots of stuff to see.

    Re: Vacation ideas?

I grew up with my mom in Storm Lake and my dad in Okoboji. My dad moved to Phoenix 2 years ago and last year I looked to rent a cabin there.... WTF? It was crazy prices! I remember the good old days where things were really inexpensive there and it wasn't a rat race to get places on the 2 lane roads.

Just in case you didn't know... I'm a girl.

    Re: Vacation ideas?

The Brainerd lakes area, in Minnesota, has always been a favorite of mine. It's about 375 miles from Des Moines. If you love the outdoors like I do (Golfing, fishing, boating, hiking, etc) you would love it. Plenty of things for kids to do as well. The resort that my family always stayed at is called Craguns. It's located on Gull Lake just about 15 miles from Brainerd.

I tend to want to get as far away from DSM as possible, so I am no help :)

North Shore of Lake Superior, several places to stay around Grand Marais, Lutsen, etc. The best pizza I've ever had was at Sven and Ollie's in Grand Marais. And the scenery and wildlife are unbelievable. You can also make a day trip to Thunder Bay Ontario. We've done it twice and it's a great relaxing trip

    Re: Vacation ideas?

If you go to the Black Hills you will want to be aware of the Rally. Come late July and then August the area is crawling with bikers and lodging rates skyrocket. If you want to go for cheap you will want to take your vacation before then.

    Re: Vacation ideas?

I've done a lot of traveling, and here are a few ideas:
    1. For Minnesota fun, the closest and easiest with super lakes is the Alexandria, MN area. You can google tripadvisor and find options. Nice area.
    2. Duluth is a great city. Sorta like a little San Francisco. Lots of hotels to choose from, great seaside. Best trip if you want a mix of "the ocean" and views.
    3. Black Hills. Beautiful area, but commercialized. Fun to see, but more of a travel vacation
    4. Our favorite spot, but further away. YMCA of the rockies in Estes Park. A beautiful resort, with cabins under 100. Lots to see, beautiful mountains. YMCA of the Rockies-Colorado mountain lodging-conferences-groups-reunions. It's our favorite spot inthe world, great hiking and lots to do.
    There you go.

Devil's Lake in N Dakota if you like walleye. Almost guarenteed limit of walleye, some northern's and white bass at times for fun as catch and release. Scenery not great, casino nearby if you like that, always the couple of cold ones and just kick backand relax.

    Re: Vacation ideas?

Family type vacation - Table Rock Lake. We take the kids every year. Clear warm water. Good Fishing.Everything to do in Branson.

Wild Getaway - Lake of the Ozarks. Go without the kids every year and tackle the party cove. Probably not that great of a place if you don't have a boat that is 24 feet or more.
