    Cool..but disturbing map

This is a map of current gas prices around the country by county.
I honestly never thought it would be getting to this. When it affects every service and items you buy at a store is when I get upset.
Milk, Bread, Beer, Fertilizer, pizza delivery, lumber, diapers, clothes etc.. all go up in price because of this. I saw a guy at the gas station today that bought 24 gallons of gas, a carton of smokes, gallon of milk and 2 - Mountian Dews. His total at the counter was $135. How do people do that? I would be trading my suv in and would stop smoking really fast. There is going to come a point where its not worth driving anymore. It seems like everyone in American is living behond their paychecks and this is going to throw people completely under the bus. Its too bad we are still putting Trillions into Iraq. That money could have been used to research other methods of fuel or funding new schools or help people get off the streets in Detroit etc.
Meanwhile most people get a 3-4 percent raise and try to limp along.
    It depresses me.
    Thats my beef.
On a side note...I do blame a lot of this on ourselves. People don't need a $300,000+ house, 40,000 cars, 60'' TVs with 5 others in the house, $200 family cell phone plans, $140 Satalite/Cable Bills/Internet, Netflix, eating out/going to the bar etc, 4 types of game systems, BlueRay DVD's , 3 computers, and on and on......I am one of those people so don't think I am innocent, but I added up all the unneeded expenses we have and I could use that as my mortgage payment in a small town 35 minutes North of Ames.

Tim_redd....You need to call me sometime. We need to talk Vegas.

    Anyway.
I wonder if that stat is because most of the countries are about the size of Denny Albaughs golf course? A lot of those countries also have superior Mass transit compared to the US. It would be like Iowa being its own country and having rail and busses everywhere. The problem is when people are living life paycheck to paycheck this puts them under. I also don't like being dependant on oil. we need to get something figured out with that.

Don't forget that all states have different taxes on their gas ... one of the many reasons why gas has different prices from state to state.

There is not a single public transportation system in the world that makes a dime in profit. How do they stay in business? Subsidies. How do governments pay for subsidies for mass transit? Gasoline taxes. Which explains why Europe has some of the most expensive gas in the world (much more expensive than ours)

Pretty soon, you won't have to live in California to enjoy outrageous energy prices. All we need to do is pass stringent environmental laws, and we'll get to benefit too. I had wondered for a while why California had all of these problems, so I just asked google, and here we go:

Economic Scene; Gasoline prices are easing -- but not in California. Should the state step in? - New York Times

The basic problem comes down to supply and demand. California uses a special low-polluting blend of gasoline known as CaRFG (California reformulated gasoline), which is produced by only 13 in-state refineries. In 2003 these refineries produced about 15 billion gallons, a figure almost identical to the 14.8 billion gallons consumed in the state.
California's production capacity is so closely matched to its demand that even sharp increases in price result in little additional production of gasoline.

Did anybody notice the gas prices along Saylorville(sp?) lake? Interesting how they jump the entire scale from bottom to top.

Thats because of the marina gas, the gas available on the lake. Marina fuel is always (and has been for years) anywhere from $0.50 to $1.00 more than what is available on land.
