    Rollerblades

The workout thread got me thinking about rollerblading. I bought some last summer that I used occasionally, but I was probably 10 or 11 last time I wore blades for an extended period of time since that's how I got around my dad's small town when I was that age in the summer.

But I've got bad knees, I mean horrible knees. I had surgery when I was 12, 14, and 15 for a dislocation, a "clean up" and an ACL tear. I have seven screws and a plate in the left knee and I'm only 20. Anyway, I've never been able to run because of it and when I used my rollerblades last summer there was no pain at all. I think it's sorta like an elliptical only not quite so boring. My question--how long of "runs" (rides? skates? trips? i dont know what to call them) would I have to go on to get essentially the same workout as running 2-3 miles a day?

Before I had the plate put in (via dislocation) I could easily run a couple miles a day. I was in cross country and track in middle school and would go running with my brother on his training runs starting around age 8. I've gained quite a bit of weight that I'd love to lose, but I get bored on ellipticals and would rather walk/blade than ride a bike.

    TIA.

I think its a little bit more about the ammount of time you spend doing it, not necessiarly the distance you go

    Re: Rollerblades

Can't really help you with that.

I have a pair of blades and a bad knee. The blades were bought for me by a girl I was sort of seeing. (She loved to rollerblade and wanted to teach me.) I haven't used them in about 3 years.

    Re: Rollerblades

Depends on the pace...in high school we'd roller blade for cross country practice around town just for something other than running and there were days we bladed a mile at a decent pace and it felt like running 5 by the time I was done. Blading long distance can be a really good workout.

    Re: Rollerblades

I would agree with Aaron - the amount of time spent doing it is probably more important than the actual distance.

Found this basic information on Google for you, not sure of the source.

    1) Roller skating involves almost all of your body's muscles and is equivalent to jogging in terms of its health benefits, according to UCLA research.

    2) One hour of moderate roller skating burns 300 calories (six miles per hour) on a 143 pound person.

    3) Roller skating is an aerobic activity. Aerobic activities strengthen the heart muscle. Stronger hearts pump more blood per beat and can circulate as much blood with fewer beats. By reducing your heart rate 10 beats per minute, you can save 14,000 heartbeats a day.

have you ever got caught outside In a strong rainfall? Yes or NO. If it"s yes, then you might half felt the pane of hard(tought) rain on you head. If it hurt"s then it"s tough. Yes or no. Okay I'm right and you know it.

So alothough you attempt"ed to say you didn"t understnad, now you do. Fair enough?

Hi there. I'd like to be able to walk comfortably when the 2040s roll around.

    Re: Rollerblades

I figured, but you never know.

I've been thinking about this all day after seeing quite a few people skating around yesterday. Never thought about the "coasting" and how that'll greatly change the distance vs time thing.

Just find that route your parents used to walk to school. Since it's uphill both ways, you'll never be coasting.

There's probably a little more to it than this when running is considered, but the basic defnition of calorie is "work" which is force x distance. So in theory, speed/time shouldn't matter only your weight (force) and distance (distance).

Yeah, but that commute from northern Idaho (almost Canada!) to school/job in Ames would be a pain on those hot, muggy days. But at least I'd be getting a good long workout!

I should also note, that this is the first thing I thought of upon seeing your reply:
