New use tax on internet sales

So it looks like while making the local option sales taxes aa state wide thing instead of one locally voted on. They were able to sneak in another tax increase on us.

School sales tax revamp heads to governor's desk | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

Iowans would pay about $32 million more a year in consumer use taxes on out-of-state purchases. If they have the purchase delivered to their home, they would pay a 6 percent tax. If they go to a store in another state, they wouldn’t pay the tax.

So after this goes into effect any tax free internet purchases or catalog purchases will no longer be tax free.

Just say it is for the kids.....sounds like a liberal solution.

Looks like you need a family member out of state to catch your purchase and then remail to you.

I'm kinda surprised there aren't more people ticked off about this. I kind of figured paying a extra 6% on all internet orders shipped to your home from out of state, would have more people complaining.

The people of Iowa have spoken. They've voted to put Democrats in these positions and this is what you get. No use complaining.

I'm not going to jump off a cliff over this, but as an avid internet shopper - this does stink.

Re: New use tax on internet sales

Let's back up a minute, why shouldn't internet sales be taxed just like everything else we buy? Doesn't that give out-of-state internet companies a 6% advantage over local businesses? To me this was a loop hole that was fixed rather than an additional tax.

Re: New use tax on internet sales

Well originally there was no taxes on them to help promote the use of the internet. But why does the state of iowa have a claim to money spent out of state. They are using our resources here. They don't have children in our schools etc.

I understand it gives them a upper hand, but adding the 6% tax to the sales is not going to give local businesses the upper hand either. Items will still be cheaper on the internet.

and the 100's of years out of state catalogs sales have been taking place...

I disagree with the loophole argument. It was usually a wash or a little in savings after you paid for the shipping.

The Interwebs pushed this over the top for a Dem led state to latch on too...

“It’s not a tax increase, it’s a tax shift,” Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal said. “It’s a tax shift away from property taxes.”
Another idiot politician who thinks that those of us with brains will believe this. Problem is, there are a lot of citizens without brains. It's not a tax shift, Mike, it's a tax increase. We all know that property taxes don't go down. Any time the levy rate is decreased, the assessor knows how much to increase our assessments by.

Re: New use tax on internet sales

    Question:
How are they going to enforce or verify internet sales? Say if I buy something on eBay for 200 $, is eBay going to report this sale to the state of Iowa?

Re: New use tax on internet sales

It is hard to say, in earlier news stories before this was approved. The stories said the the use tax was for businesses only. Now it seems to have gone onto everyone.

I doubt it would get enacted on ebay since for the most part there people are dealing with used items.
