Is this what "The Great Escape" is about? I have never seen it but am kind of interested now.

I thought it might be what "Hart's War" was about.

    Re: Tunnel Harry

What a COOL site, thanks for sharing this!! I remember seeing the movie many years ago and as I remember it was very accurate as to this tunnel and the digging. They came up short of the trees. In the darkness they had to time there leaving the exit by when the lights passed by. They left one person at the exit to help the others out between the light sweeps as those leaving didn't know what was happening until they got to the exit.
Someone had to keep pumping air into the tunnel to help breathing all the time they were digging and exiting.
What a trmendous feet of planning and enginering, to just come up short of the expected tree line.

    Re: Tunnel Harry

I'd recommend "The Great Escape" if you are interested. Very entertaining movie with a lot of great actors and they worked hard to make it pretty accurate. (And yes Hogan's Heroes is based upon the great escape)

That has got to be a ton of sand/dirt to dispose of and hide to not bring attention to such thing

    Re: Tunnel Harry

In the movie and book "The Great Escape", they go into some detail on how they accomplished that.

They took up gardening, and developed pouches to carry in their pants, so as they shuffled around in the dirt, they could release the dirt, and stir it around, so as not to be seen.

    Re: Tunnel Harry

If you like "Tunnel Harry", here is another true escape story, which occurred at the exact same camp.

The Wooden Horse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A very unlikely story, indeed! A group of Brit POWs, pretending to be gymnasts, use an vaulting horse to cover their successful attempt to dig a tunnel and escape.

Very cool. Never seen/read either of the movies/books, but considering picking them up for the summer.
