    Beer Snobs Take Note...

2008 Brewers Association World Beer Cup Winners

The 2008 World Beer Cup awards are in... Check out the winners in Category 33...

    Category 33: American-Style Light Lager (34 Entries)
    Gold: Old Milwaukee Light

    Silver: Lone Star Light

    Bronze: Natural Light

Granted, there are over 90 categories, with 20-40+ entries per category... Makes me wonder, because Miller Lite has been promoting the fact that the won the gold last year, and suddenly 1 year later the Beast wins the gold!

All that means is I do not want to drink ANY beer from the category.

Isn't "the Beast" Milwaukee's Best, not Old Milwaukee?

First case of beer I ever bought (with fake ID). A brilliant high school friend said "it comes in a 30-pack so you get 6 more!" Yeah 6 more of nasty beer, but we didn't know any better.

of all american lagers Natural Light is actually the best in my opinion. I don't like any of them, but if I am forced to drink them I'll take a naty light over bud light or miller light any day of the week.

Category 67: Strong Ale (21 Entries)

    Silver Cabin Fever
    Boundary Bay Brewery
    Bellingham, Washington

If you are EVER in Bellingham for any amount of time, you should find Boundary Bay and go there. Best Oatmeal Stout in existence.

Widmer is definitely good, but Pyramid is better in my opinion. Maybe I'm just saying that because most times I've had Pyramid it was accompanied by the wings at Pyramid brewpub in Seattle. All things considered though, I'm still glad to be back in the midwest drinking good ol' Boulevard Wheat!

    Good one!

Reminds me of the time I found an unopened bottle of Icehouse buried deep in my couch, many months after a party. I set it on a shelf in my room, not sure what to do with it until one weekend a couple roommates had bought a 12 pack of Icehouse. I put a tiny mark on the label of the "skunky" bottle so I would know which one it was, and slipped it into the fridge amongst the fresh bottles. I thought it would be funny to see the reaction when one of them drank it. However, after drinking a fresh bottle I realized it was already so bad, the several month old bottle could be fatal. At that point I 'fessed up and took the skunky bottle out of the fridge and returned it to its rightful place on the shelf. It could still be somewhere in the basement of 327 Stanton if anyone wants it...

    Re: Beer Snobs Take Note...

I noticed a couple of things on the list. Category 86 (sour ale), there were 4 entries, but no gold awarded. The silver and bronze were awarded. Were they so bad that the judges decided not to award a gold? Same deal with 43 and 45.

I also cracked up when I saw that Steel Reserve won an award (American Specialty Lager). It's my cheapo beer of choice from time to time, but giving it a gold for anything is amusing to me.

Had a taste test between Natural Light and Bud Light at a tailgate a few years back. You were blind folded and had to distinguish between the two. It was almost impossible to tell the difference. No one could do it correctly consistently. They are both made by Busch so I'm sure they are very similar recipes.
