    The shaft

I think the pizza guy got the shaft though they did give him some walking away money:

    Re: The shaft

Sucks to be a 38 year old pizza delivery guy. Maybe instead of carrying a gun he should have thought about bettering his career situation.

I don't know whose side to take on this, both were in the wrong.

    Re: The shaft

Pizza Hut did this guy a favor. No sense working for a company that promotes the emotional rape of its employees.

There are lots of better jobs out there.

Maybe he should now pretend to be a crippled architect and stalk the new hot dentist in town who just moved from Boston.

    Re: The shaft

He could be a fake bum and stand on the exit ramp off I-80 & Merle Hay holding a sign. Go out there on a friday (paydays for most) and sucker a few chumps into giving him money, then walk back to his Audi that's parked in the QT parking lot.

Haha, that is 90% true too. I've actually been filling up at that QT and literally watched a "fake" bum walk from the exit ramp and get in his nice F-150 in the QT parking lot and drive off.

    Re: The shaft

Some watchdog group did a study on "Will Work For Food" bums a few years ago, and showed incomes in the $40,000 -$60,000 range, non-taxed, in major metro areas.

I was living in Chicago at the time, and there was one on every corner.

Defending yourself from a gun-wielding attacker is wrong? I just don't know what to say about that....

And pizza delivery is a really nice "tween jobs" job. I've been your basic 40 year old pizza delivery guy, and don't appreciate the snobbery implicit in your post.

    Re: The shaft

The important question would be, "How did he get to this point, as a 38-year old pizza guy?" There could be some truly unavoidable life situation that got him to this point. A sudden, unseen termination, any # of plausible scenarios. Maybe he owns a business on the side, and needs this as he builds.

Or, maybe he has an EIU degree, ..............

Maybe wait before jumping to judgment.

    Re: The shaft

Well, how he came to be a 38-year old pizza guy is public record:

Hansen: Pizza delivery 'hero' feels more like victim | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

    Note the following paragraph:

Spiers has been delivering pizzas for 10 years, working for various employers around town. He's a single dad with a 10-year-old daughter who needs a ride to school every morning. The flexibility suits him, and he makes enough to stay afloat.
Pizza delivery money is good, without a large commitment. When I was in an accident in 1998, it's about all I could do with my head injury. I had already worked pizza for several years as a manager/corporate "store-fixer".

I don't mind the jokes, but when some folks on this forum repeatedly make caustic references about the value of a human being based on the type of work he/she does, or the size of their paycheck, it just about ticks me off. I think it's indicative of a small mind.

As a side note, this guy used to work for me, when I managed a pizza hut in Cedar Rapids:
Pizza delivery man beaten to death with a hammer
Can anyone honestly claim that it is a "good thing" that he wasn't allowed to possess the means to defend himself???

    Re: The shaft

Well, Pizza Hut is never going to get another dime of my money. Not that I ordered from them much, but every once in awhile I got a craving for a stuffed crust pizza. I guess in the future I'll have to find a place that has stuffed crust pizza AND allows its employees to defend themselves against low-life scum.

I read that article right after making that post. But, it was too late to take it back.

Does seem like he made a career of it.

Yes, he should be able to defend himself. Nobody can be mandated to be helpless, and pizza guys carry actual money to various parts of a town.

No, what's sucks is to be a 38 year old welfare recipient. What does carrying a gun have to do with one's career situation? And they were both wrong? Did the perp have a "permit" to steal pizza and money?

Exactly. It's sad when society has a measure of disdain for what are considered menial jobs, when the real disdain should go to those who would rather feed from the public teet than lower themselves to such a career.

I'd give you more rep but I have to spread it around first. Great post.
