    Building a Fence

Hey all, I am planning on building a privacy fence this summer and had some questions. Does anyone know what the codes and permit requirements are in Des Moines for a fence? How do I go about getting a permit? Does it have to be inspected? Would you recommend concrete in the post holes? I have heard it is better to just pack rock and sand.

We're finally going to get some privacy from the creepy rental house next door... Plus, when I get this done my wife says I can get a dog.

    Re: Building a Fence

I thought this was going to be a thread on how well the feds are doing with getting a fence built on the southern border.... but anyway, good luck with your project.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

I had the same problem when I lived in AZ...

Their was a rental across the street and the residents (all 15 of them, 6 legally living there) were running a car stereo and hydraulic lift installation company out of the garage.

Several neighbors called the City and the property owners and had them evicted. Lots of hydraulic fluid running off into the storm sewers.

    Re: Building a Fence

    As for the fence...

Chain link 4' and under does not require a permit. I believe privacy fence or chain link over 4' requires a permit from the Permit and Development Center.

    Sec. 26-231. Permit exemptions.
    (a) A building permit shall not be required for the following:

    (1) One-story detached accessory buildings used as tool or storage sheds, playhouses, pet shelters, and similar uses, provided the projected roof area does not exceed 120 square feet in area and complies with all applicable zoning requirements. Such building must be located at least three feet from any property line and six feet from any dwelling.

    (2) Chain link or wire fences four feet or less in height and all other fences three feet or less in height.

    OpenDNS

When I built my fence (chain link); I dug the holes, placed 6" of crushed rock, and filled the remainder with concrete. Haven't had a problem with the fence in the last 9 years. One advantage I had at the time...I got the rock for free as I worked for the DOT and they had a lot they were disposing of in the materials lab.

We installed a wood fence surrounding our back yard and side deck (~250 linear feet). If you are going the wood route, I will take the time to give you some great tips and needs for doing a good/great job.

The link I attached lists the fence requirements in Johnston, so I would assume the city of Des Moines would be something similar.

If you have covenants, be sure to read them as well as they may be different than the city code.

    I'd use concrete.
