    Teacher's salaries

Kind of a continuation of a previous debate. In the process of researching information of cost of living adjusted teacher's salaries, the best resource I found was here:

    Teacher Magazine: Login

You have to create a log-in and provide your information, but they have a cool table creator that allows you to sort information by the topics that you like. I made the following table to see how Iowa ranks in cost of living adjusted teacher pay.

    edcounts-data-table-2008-04-15-09-48-39.csv

Median teacher pay in Iowa is around $42K in 2002. Median household income in 2002 in Iowa is just a hair less (as near as I could tell on the last page: http://www.iowapolicyproject.org/200...-labor-day.pdf)

    Re: Teacher's salaries

That's average teacher income, not median so that might not be a good comparison.

    Re: Teacher's salaries

Can you really use pay from 2002 when it is 2008? Lots of states have been working on making teacher pay higher.

I teach in Wyoming and I can tell you that is not the average anymore.

    Re: Teacher's salaries

Maybe some day teachers will be evaluated on their ability to teach. What a novel concept!

I'm the son of a teacher and I originally wanted to go in to education... and let me tell you, I really don't think the salaries are that bad.

    Re: Teacher's salaries

They are definitely competitive with/better than Airplane Mechanics, who have slightly less education requirements, much more built-in costs and a much, much greater personal risk and liability at work.

    See this Thread:
    http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/...good-idea.html

and tell me where this conversation goes.

    Back to the origional topic:

I was just stating that the 2002 numbers aren't accurate for now. The reason I teach in Wyoming is the pay is better than Iowa and the cost of living is cheaper. (atleast where I am at)

Yeah but you have to live in Wyoming...

I'd rather live in Omaha than Wyoming, and I've been to Wyoming. As for no state income tax, well, you still have to live in Wyoming. The guy from Alaska has lots of good reasons why he lives there (I think taxes was one) but no damn way would I live in Alaska for any of those reasons. QOL is more important to me and mine would be less in either of those two places.

On another point, 2002 data is a little old for a great comparison. I think even Iowas numbers have improved, but who knows if they have, in fact, kept up.
