    North Dakota strikes oil

North Dakota and Montana have an estimated 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil in an area known as the Bakken Formation.

A U.S. Geological Survey assessment, released April 10, shows a 25-fold increase in the amount of oil that can be recovered compared to the agency's 1995 estimate of 151 million barrels of oil.

It's also a little known fact that Iowa sits on a TON of coal.

I've heard higher estimates of 4-12 billion recoverable barrels as well. Already a bit of an oil are, just not a lot of wells yet.

Does that mean in a bazillion years and with lots of pressure we could be sitting on the richest state in the union? We can finally bowl in Jack Trice.

Fargo is on the opposite side of the state...I suggest Williston or Dickinson. In other bad news, my land is not in the Bakken Formation...oh well...more slavin' away for the man...

That is NOT a little known fact. Iowas history and its mid-section are all about coal. Knoxville,Dallas Melcher area along with the town of What Cheer were all huge coal mining areas. Its still there. Just not a profitable to mine it now.

I've seen a map of Des Moines which show the locations of mine shaft openings all over what is now the city. It's pretty cool.
