    Re: Interesting article on recruiting...

Very interesting facts. Thanx for sharing the link. However, it does all come back to the head coach. He recruits his staff. If he chooses poorly, he gets people who either don't recognize talent and character, or can't get it to come to ISU. I disagree with Bunn's assertion - You can't blame McCarney. He has to, and, to his credit, has accepted the responsibility for the program. At this point, you can't "blame" Pollard. It's now up to him to make the decision at the end of the season and then he, too, is accountable for the future results, whichever path he chooses - Dan or change.

True. And just as Mac gets to take credit for the good players and success stories at ISU, he has to take the blame for the bad apples and guys who screw up royally, fair or not.

    Re: Interesting article on recruiting...

As a general rule of thumb, the buck does stop at the staff, they should know the character of the kids they are recruiting. If they are truly "good" kids when they come to campus, then there is a mentoring problem.

Of course, its not an exact science, but there are reasons that some schools seem to have worse luck than others.

One somewhat example of this is Troy Davis. While his attitude was tip top, (and I did meet him in the library, he wanted some help with a library assignment) his grades coming out of high school were questionable to the point no one would risk a scholly on him except Walden.

The big Florida schools were all reluctant to give a scholarship until after he passed his entrance exams, where Walden gave him one before he took the tests. And yes, the "Big 3" all were courting him, and if I recollect correctly Miami(?) offered on the heels of our offer.

It was a gamble that paid off. Many of these gambles don't, as we have seen especially with the JUCO croud.

    Re: Interesting article on recruiting...

Webster Patrick was the number one all purpose back in the country coming out of high school and signed with the Clones. Off course he didnt make grades and had to go to JUCO. Then he was going to come here again and once again didnt qualify. Sad. He would have been a junior this year I believe?

And wasn't Gunn the one that was involved in that sexual assault case? I remember 2 clones being on Outside the Lines about it a couple years back and I believe he was one of the guys
