    Holy Cow Iowa, more taxes?!!??!

    From desmoinesregister.com

Statewide school tax advances in House | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

Here in Polk County we pay the local option sales tax ($.01) per dollar. This will expire within the next two years I believe and would be up to the taxpayers to vote yes or no on continuing the tax. My guess is that it would have failed terribly after the 'Project Destiny' fiasco.

Maybe the reason people leave Iowa is because wages are lower and taxes are higher then a majority of the states around. How is this possible? I want to keep my money! Spend our tax dollars wisely! Do not give money to every open hand that comes to you! Make tough decisions and decide what is in the best interest of all Iowans, not just special interest groups that claim something is important!

Teachers own our government in Iowa. Are they suggesting that we throw money at the problem? I think they are.

Yay, more taxes. I was looking forward to the one-cent "local option" sales tax going down in flames when it came up for renewal, but it looks like it'll just be a wash. The legislature sees that the cash cow is about to be slaughtered, so they're taking action.

Re: Holy Cow Iowa, more taxes?!!??!

This would replace the 1 cent school option sales tax with a uniform state wide 1 cent school option sales tax, not add to it.

The good news is that it would standardize that tax across the state.

The bad news is that the locals won't be allowed to vote for or against it. (For the record, I did vote for our local option taxes as they do directly benefit my community. i would vote against this because they still haven't given back the temporary 1 cent increase on regular sales taxes from the early 90's - and this one won't ever expire).

Not quite done ranting just yet. Iowa has steadily spent more and more money for steadily declining scholastic results. Would you give your investment guy more and more money as he continually produced losses?

yes it would replace the current tax. At least now the people have a say in whether or not it could be renewed. We have all seen the money was not spent/allocated properly. We can see that the government does not know how to spend our money. For the record I am totally agree with your last paragraph.

Re: Holy Cow Iowa, more taxes?!!??!

This is good news for small rural school districts who, despite having a county local option tax, had little or no county spending. In some rural areas, all residents went to a close larger commerical area to spend money therefore benefiting another counties district and not their own. It wasn't fair. Now, all money will spread even on a per student basis. So, this is good news for education in Iowa, particularly in those places that had the most need. I don't like taxes either but having lived in other areas of the country where public schools were in poor shape, I'm glad to see this happen in Iowa.

Part of the problem with school funding is the way schools are currently funded i.e. not equally. Much of school's funding comes from property taxes which means some schools have enough or a lot of money (relatively) while some have consistent budget issues where things like basic building maintenance isn't done like it should be.

Comparing schools to an "investment guy" is apples to oranges.

Hooray.... Iowa already has one of the highest overall tax rates in the country, so let's just add some more!!!! Yet they wonder why they can't keep workers/graduates here? The people running our state are idiots, plain and simple.

Why invest more if there are no ROI????

The core issue here is we keep throwing more and more money at the schools and get seemingly nothing from it.

    An example;

Remember how Prairie Meadows was going to be the savior of schools and was supposed to lower both sales and property taxes? Neither occurred, in fact both went up shortly afterwards.

A side note of gov't mismanagement is that they could not make Prairie Meadows profitable. They sold it to a private organization, and pretty much overnight it became profitable.

Re: Holy Cow Iowa, more taxes?!!??!

How about the fact that Witherspoon started closing schools after our citizens decided to raise their own taxes because they were told it would prevent school closures?

May as well just tighten their budget....don't get much from them when they get more and more tax money.

How many people really consider the state tax level when making their choice as to where to live? Not a whole lot I'm guessing. I'd venture a guess that most people end up where they are because of (1) family, (2) employment, and (3) geography. Iowa is rather lacking in the geography department, and always will be a bit too cold, a bit too flat, and a bit too far from water. Family also can't be addressed much legislatively. Sales taxes are not going to affect employment. As I'll be looking to start a family in a few years, I would put quality of education above tax rate as well.
