    Medal of Honor Awarded Today

Navy SEAL paid ultimate price to save buddies - CNN.com

I didn't see another thread on this. Maybe some of you read this already, or saw the coverage on TV this evening.
When a grenade bounced off his chest and fell to the floor near his fellow troops, Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor acted out of instinct. His actions didn't stem from a lack of training. His instant reaction was to protect his comrades.
The Navy says he committed a selfless act: jumping on the grenade and taking the full force of the blast.
President Bush was moved to tears during the ceremony, as I was reading the article linked above.

These individuals are what makes our country great. I think that these kind of stories have to be shared to make people remember that. Setting all the political BS aside...

Wow and it wasn't even just one selfless act, he did heroic stuff several times, truly an example of a hero.

I forget where I read it but actually in instances like this I recall that for the guys that survive theres often some severe psychological trauma associated with it, even up to personality shifts.

In today's society, we hear so much of all the bad stuff goes on in the war, it has been long overdue to hear such a great and touching story!

Definitely one of the good guys. His family should be proud, as I'm sure they are.

I wouldn't doubt it. I mean, someone gave their life in exchange for your own, that's not easy to wrap your mind around.

Re: Medal of Honor Awarded Today

I had the opportunity to play for a statue dedication in Littleton, CO for a local son who died in Afghanistan. Danny Dietz was a Navy Seal who died when his unit was ambushed. He was posthumusly awarded the Navy Cross. Thousands of people attended the ceremony.

The Secretary of the Navy spoke as well as a former Navy Seal and Navy Cross recipient. The entire ceremony and event was very moving and the tribute and respect paid was overwhelming.

I felt and still feel a great deal of pride and am honored to be part of that dedication.

May the sun be on his shoulders and the wind at his back. Viva Michael Monsoor! Your dedication to country and fellow service members will not be forgotten.

Re: Medal of Honor Awarded Today

As many of you got done ready this, like me, did you ask yourself what you would have done?

I believe it is instinct to avoid that level of danger. Instinct to dive the opposite direction from the grenade. It would clearly be heroic just to try and grab it and throw it again, out of the way. If you did that, you might still have the possibility to live and save your friends. That would be mind boggling, but to dive on it, knowing absolute death. I shared that story with the rest of my family, I was speechless.

There should be a picture and description of this man under the definition of man and hero in the dictionry.
