How do I wipe a back-up Hard Drive clean?

I want to use my old 80 G hard drive as an external back-up. So I hooked it up, and from My Computer I right clicked and hit Format. I did a complete format, not a quick format.

But the drive says it only has 47 G of free space - out of 80G. I had XP Professional loaded on it before. How come Format didn't wipe the entire drive?

Do I need to buy software, or do I have to use a boot disk to wipe an external drive?..... Help!

Check that there are not other partitions on the drive.

Right click on my computer, go to manage, then disk management. Is there more than 1 partition? If so, delete the second one and extend the first, or just delete both and create a new bigger one.

Darik's Boot and Nuke (Hard Drive Disk Wipe)

This will securely wipe the hard drive.

Brianhos is right, more than likely when you loaded XP onto your external hard drive it set a partition that was too big. And since when an OS sets a boot partition nothing can touch it, not even a reformat, you must go in and manually delete the partition and set up a new one. If you want to install an OS onto it, I would probably set aside 5 GB. But I like to be generous with OS space!

You know, the other way to really wipe a hard-drive is to just get a REALLY big magnet...

lol, seriously though, unless you want to ruin your hard drive, don't do that.
