    Re: Buyout Numbers

Those are the same figures I had heard internally. I think people will be quite surprised to see how small of a hit it would be to make a change. Even though Mac's annual package is pretty hefty, the University kept the buyout low just incase.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Jeremy, do you know of any buyout terms for assisitant coaches?
Or is it just the head coach we need to worry about.

That's cheap. I thought for sure that they would give him next year but that's less than a million.

    Re: Buyout Numbers

    $225,000 x 4 years = $900,000
    Season ticket (2006 price) $260
    $900,000 / $260 = 3462 total season tickets to pay for this.
866 per year if you want to break it down further.
That's pretty crude math, but it is very doable!

I believe that assistants typically have year-to-year contracts, so there is no buyout, probably what is left in the year.

    Re: Buyout Numbers

If you saw a new coach come in we would get a lot more than a 866 ticket bump.

None of the assistants have any guaranteed contracts, we wouldn't need to worry about any buyouts with them. It really wouldn't be a very hefty buyout at all when you think about the increase in tickets, the new excitement that would surround the program, etc.

I really hope that if Mac does go that we hire someone exciting. GMac wouldn't have been an exciting hire if he wasn't from the State of Iowa where everyone knows him. Look at the MBB team...we are being picked to finish 11th or 12th in the Big 12 and we are nearing a record amount of season ticket sales. It's like a breath of fresh air.

    Re: Buyout Numbers

Michael Bradley from Sporting News summed it up well this morning. He wanted to know who ISU fans think would come in? Not only that, but he said that if you hire a 1-AA coach the "next step" for this coach is just to get to the level of coaching a Big XII team. Then if we hire anyone and they have success with an 8 or 9 win season for a year or two they will easily be lured away to many schools who can pay more than we can and do not compete with Iowa for recruits within our own state. I am not starting defense of Mac, but passing on the national perspective. He said that Mac is as loyal of a guy in the country as any and people sometimes forget where he has brought this program. Go back and look at all the numbers of wins back in ISU football in the past each year.

ďAlso, I met a lot of Iowa State fans and I donít want to leave any of that behind.Ē - DARIUS DARKS on Staying a CLONE!!!

    Re: Buyout Numbers

I don't think that anybody has any idea of the amount of new ticket holders a buyout would bring in. My guess is a staggering amount of people would become ticket holders and increase donor levels. That is the pulse of the thirty-somehting crowd that I know. If we are serious about becoming big-time w/ facilities and our programs, this move may be abigger payoff than anybody anticipates.

It IS worth the risk IMO!!!

    Re: Buyout Numbers

It is easy for those guys on the local and national level to say those things. They have no investment in Cyclone athletics and quite honestly have us stuck in a paradigm that we are trying to break out of. They do not believe that great things can be done here on an annual basis. I believe that is wrong. It is up to us to shape the perception of ISU athletics by attending and demanding.

This "we have to understand who we are" crap is for BVD and his followers. Be bold and take a risk that we can expect better. We certainly deserve it.

I felt that Bradley painted ISU fans w/ too broad of a brush. He made us seem impatient and disloyal. Hey, I'm not the guy who almost begged TCU for an interview six years ago, that was Dan. I'm not the guy who was PO'd to not get a better look for the Wiscy job, that ws Dan. If Dan was as loyal to us as we have been to him, he would announce that he is resigning and we could move forward today!

A wining conference record once every twelve years is simply not getting it done. Ignore the non conference window dressing. We need to be competitive in our conference and except for a two year window, we are not.(2000 was a 5-3 conference team that was DESTROYED by the three heavyweights on the schedule)

Remember too that Michael Bradley was on with Larry Cotlar. Cotlar will say and do anything to keep the outlook bright and sunny so that he doesn't lose having ISU coaches & Pollard come on his show.

    Re: Buyout Numbers

Great post Land Shark. ISU could certainly afford to pay a coach more who came in and was successful because it would obviously lead to more revenue. We don't have a cap of $1.1mil, we're just paying what is deserving (debatable..).

    Re: Buyout Numbers

I'd like to see Steve Loney as head coach. I'd have to think he'd be interested. He used to say it would be his dream job.
