    New Japanese restaurants

Anyone been to one of the new Japanese places yet? Fuji on Duff (beside Old Chicago) and Shogun on LW by the west HyVee. I'd be interested to hear reviews.

    Re: New Japanese restaurants

We went to Fuji on Monday for lunch. Got in and out in a half-hour, but we didn't sit at the grill table. I got the vegetarian dish, and it was surprisingly good - not as good as the chicken, which was great.

If you're going on the weekend, I'd try and get a reservation. We tried going on Saturday night at 8:00, but it was going to be an hour and a half wait.

Good to know, I plan on going there tomorrow night.

Apare in Urbandale is my favorite one in the Des Moines area. Taki #2. Ohana way down the list...

Is Apare that good? How are the prices? I have been wanting to try it... Ohana is extremely average with the exception of the sauce on the scallops...

    Re: New Japanese restaurants

nice to see some more diversity in eats in Ames... but I noticed and am perplexed that neither of these new places are located in either deadtown errr downtown or campustown... are these Japanese places primarily sushi or do they have an extended menu?

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Prices are similar to Taki and Ohana. The show was MUCH better at Apare than the other two, if that is what you are there for. The food also was much better.

If you are going out to party and get hammered, Taki is the best choice. If you want a good show and excellent food, Apare is the place. If you want to pay too much for a mediocore experience, go to Ohana.

    Re: New Japanese restaurants

We went to Fuji last Friday and we sat at the grill. It was pretty good- comparable to Taki in DSM (except they didn't push Saki bombs on us). I got the scallops and they were excellent. BF got the steak and he enjoyed it. Woman sitting next to us got the salmon and she said it was good but cooked longer than she would've liked so it was a bit tough. I suppose you could request they not cook it so long.
Of course it's pricey if you get the hibachi grill dishes.

I went to Fuji on Saturday night, and it was a bit of a wait, but not extremely terrible or anything you wouldn't experience anywhere else. I got the sashimi beef or something at a grill table and it was good, but they gave us a sample of their shrimp and that was absolutely mindblowing and I don't like shrimp. I definitely recommend it.

What time were you there, Bryce? I'm surprised I didn't see you guys. We may have just come at the wrong time to have a short wait.

I really want to sit at one of the grill tables. I love those at Taki, etc. I didn't try any of the sushi at lunch, but they had a really wide variety. Pretty good appetizer menu, too.

We didn't end up getting there until about 8:00 I think, I honestly can't remember. My wife saw Cyfan13 and was very happy about that.

I love that mustard sauce stuff they put on the scallops at Ohana, but other than that, I think Taki is superior in pretty much every way. I haven't been to Apare to comment though.

    Re: New Japanese restaurants

i have a mild obsession with sushi and am a big fan of taki, i found fuji to be comprable, certainly the better of the two in ames. Shogon is a little more low key and offers traditional sushi and it is okay but i doubt it last long against fuji

    Re: New Japanese restaurants

For anyone that travels up around waterloo i would personally recommend Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse....great food, lots of it, decent price for a high end product, plus the show around the flat grill is fun to watch for parents and kids alike... personal favorite is the volcano out of onions.....
