    What Motivates YOU!!

Ok, so most of you know that I teach middle school. (and for those that don't now you do)
Any way, we are in the part of the year that is long and never ending. We have a long way to go until our next break and we are in the midst of tons of state test.
My question is (for those that remember) what motivated you to do well when you were in middle school???
Or even later on in your education. What helped you to stay on track. I only ask because I have Honors and GT classes and the kids are really slipping. Class averages are going from the mid 80%s to the mid 70%

    Re: What Motivates YOU!!

oddly enough, middle school was probably the one point in my life that I tried to learn for the sole reason that I enjoyed learning. Later it was to get into college, to get a good job, to impress, etc. Middle school was just for the knowledge.....

    Re: What Motivates YOU!!

People worked in middle school? I don't think I ever even brought a book home. In fact the first time I ever remember studying was at ISU, so I guess my answer is: I was totally unmotivated in middle school.

I can understand that. Some of my students never need to study or do much work and can pull great grades. Some like the work and like the labs we do and just get great grades. The ones that break my heart right now are the ones that are trying, but just can't get a good grade. It just seems worse right now.

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

I used to be a manger in retail, but yeah.... teaching in H-Town does pay pretty good. At least in terms of what teachers get in the nation, I'm not doing too bad. Not sure I wanna pay the little boogers off just yet

Ohhh oh oh I wish I could. There is a new law... I don't remember if it is federal or state, but it says we can't give out anything un-healthy to our students.

The fine print is a pain. So much of a pain that I don't even bother with stuff that would be considered healthy.

    Re: What Motivates YOU!!

I think the world is different than when we were kids though. I mean kids are bringing home homework in elementry school nowadays. I have had to help the neighbor kids with math homework a bunch of times because their parents could not (scary!). I honestly never remember homework until HS, I guess in middle school we had it, but it was so easy that you could get it done in studyhall.

    Re: What Motivates YOU!!

I asked my kids that question. They said that there are three things that they remember about middle school that motivated them:

    1) Movie day - pick a day to have a movie in class (or go to a movie) if they make a target

    2) Class trip - educational trip (zoo, Science Museum, etc.) if they make a goal

    3) Food - have food (pizza, Subway monster sandwich, etc.) in class as a reward

They said that coupons (restaurants, etc.) for individual achievements didn't motivate them much. Unfortunately, that's what our school has been doing lately.

I like the idea of a reward if they hit a target. Right now I have a 'deal' going on that which ever class has the highest average this term, will get to pick their seats for the next term. I'm starting to think that is too long term and they are loosing site of the goal. I may need some short term goals.

Team competition - use 6 teams of 4 kids each to try for best of the week. Make it a sporting event and use Cybookie to predict which will be the best team. Keep the interest level up. Winners get to pick the movies.

You know, now that I think about it we used to have competitions for test reviews and we have gotten away from that - it may be time to get back on that.
