I think this team could suprise when they get back 4 starters from injury. Brian Barton was an absolute steal in the rule V draft, and I think he is going to be a pretty good player. This team could definitely suprise
    Go Cardinals!

    Re: Let's go CARDS!

LaRussa indicated at yesterday's workout that it would be something like:

    Schumaker, LF
    Ludwig, RF
    Pujols, 1B
    Glaus, 3B
    Ankiel, CF
    Izturis, SS
    Wainwright, SP
    Miles, 2B

He said he wanted to sit Kennedy against the lefty and save him for all the CO righties coming up.

I wonder why they don't switch Ankiel and Ludwick? Ludwick has a little more pop, but I don't know about his obp. I think Barton could beat out Shumaker, and I also hope that Colby Rasmus gets up here by the all star break.

    Re: Let's go CARDS!

Not flaming here, although I'm not a Cards fan, but just wondering...

Do you think Ankiel is the answer in the outfield? He really tailed off after his sensational start after call up last year, didn't he? Does anyone think after the HGH stuff that he will tail off even more if he was on the juice?

I was really rooting for the guy, but when that came out, it really sullied his achievements to me, even if the HGH was in his past.

He will stay with the big club, he has a great arm, a good glove, and a pretty good bat. I'm really disappointed with the HGH stuff, but I don't think he has taken any since 2003, so it hasn't been affecting his performance lately.

Ankiel will stay with the big league club, but he is not the long-term answer in the outfield. Neither is Schumaker or Ludwick. Colby Rasmus will take over in center field sometime this year (hopefully).

I will be much happier with a rotation that includes Clement, Piniero, and Mulder instead of Looper, Wellemeyer, and Thompson. The latter trio scares me. We won a lot of their starts last year, but they generally could not get past the 5th inning. Would be wonderful to get some stability back in the starting rotation. However, I'd be very surprised to ever see an effective Mulder again, and Clement and Piniero--while better alternatives than Wellemeyer and Thompson--still aren't the answer.

I cannot wait to see Chris Carpenter again. I pray he returns to his former self this fall.

Really looking forward to watch Wainwright's development. That kid is fun as hell to watch.

I have faith in Dunc. If he can make Jeff Weaver a dominant playoff pitcher, he can do anything. What do you think we'll do with our eventual surplus of starting pitchers?

    Re: Let's go CARDS!

Remember that Ankiel hit 30+ HR at AAA last year prior to being called up. So, the pop is there. He does have a high strike-out total, but so does Glaus and most power hitters.

Side note: was anyone else at the I-Cubs game last summer when Ankiel hit 3 bombs?

Their 4th starter is seriously Todd Wellemeyer?

Yeah, Piniero, Clement, Carp, and Mulder are all hurt. They should all be back by the all star break.

We have several starting pitchers on the DL to start the season: Carpenter, Mulder, Pineiro (not sure if he still is) and Clement may still be there as well.

So, if and when those guys come back, there will be drastic changes to the rotation.
