    Vikings still pursuing Sage?

    per this morning's Star Tribune:

Forget No. 1. Who will be Vikings' No. 2 guy?

The biggest trouble with this scenario (which isn't addressed in the article), is what is the incentive for Houston to give up their #2 QB, when he was so valuable last year?

The Texans have a history of botched up QB deals and contracts. They ended up with a poor selection and contract when they made David Carr the overall #1 pick in the draft. They paid Sage more than some starters to bring him in to be a backup. Then they offered too much to acquire Schaub and gave him a contract worth something like 5 times more than Sage is making. Now they are in the embarrassing position of having many think that Sage should start over Schaub.

They could be trying to avoid the who should start dilemma by moving Sage. The problem is that they are trying to extort a 2nd round pick to make themselves look good while the going rate for a backup is more like a 3rd or 4th.

I'm starting to jump on the Vikings ship (no pun intended) because being a Dolphins fan sucks living in Iowa. If they get Sage, that would seal the deal for me!

    Re: Vikings still pursuing Sage?

Love this quote--- Rosenfels is widely known as a strong character player (he's an Iowan, after all). Sage would top off a great group of free agents that the Vikes have signed. They definately need some stability at quarterback. Only problem is- after about the second pre-season game, the who should be the starter debate begins.

    Re: Vikings still pursuing Sage?

I've read some fan comments about this awhile back when it was first rumored and the thinking was Sage was too valuable the past 2 seasons to just give away so the Texans should be looking for at least a 2nd or 3rd round draft choice if they do trade him. I still think he's a better fit in Houston as the starter tha Schaub is

    Re: Vikings still pursuing Sage?

Doesn't look like it is going to happen according to the Pioneer Press article by Sean Jensen ...

Vikings giving up on Rosenfels? (Vikings Now)

    Vikings giving up on Rosenfels?

The Vikings' potential trade for QB Sage Rosenfels is "dead," the Houston Chronicle reported earlier today.
The Chronicle also reported that the Vikings are preparing to sign veteran backup QB Gus Frerotte.
"We never intended to trade Sage," Texans owner Bob McNair said today at the NFL owners meeting. "We consider Matt (Schaub) and Sage as 1 and 1a.
"We're always looking to improve team," McNair said, according to the Chronicle. "We make every decision based on what it does to improve our team. We do it at all positions. If we can't improve, we won't do it."
What would it take to get Rosenfels?
"Somebody would have to value him much more highly than we do, and so far, that hasn't happened," McNair said, according to the paper.

    Re: Vikings still pursuing Sage?

    This is from ESPN:

The Vikings have reached an agreement in principle with former Rams backup quarterback Gus Frerotte.

"The thing is if you watch tape of Gus in St. Louis, you can still see that he can still fling the football and make all the spot throws," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "I talked to Scott Linehan about why he was cut by the Rams, and he told me that [offensive coordinator] Al Saunders wanted Trent Green as a backup because he knew his system, but Scott thought Gus can still play. You can see that he can by watching the film."
The deal will be for more than one year, but it won't be completed until after the NFL owners meeting, which is concluding Wednesday in West Palm Beach, Fla. Both sides reached agreement on the numbers over the past couple of days but it will take a few days to go over the language of the contract.
Acquiring Frerotte will end any trade discussions with the Texans over backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels. The Vikings offered a third-round choice for Rosenfels. The Texans wanted a second-rounder. Even though the Texans recently signed Quinn Gray for the minimum salary, the team plans to keep three veteran quarterbacks on the roster.
The 36-year-old Frerotte played with the Vikings in 2003 and 2004 before going to the Dolphins in 2005 and the Rams the past two seasons.
John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

One of the ESPN shows this morning mentioned that the Texans were concerned with the durability of Schaub.

If Sage stays in Houston at least he'll have a stud to throw to in Andre Johnson (assuming he Johnson stays healthy).

Heard that the Vikings could draft Sam Keller since he knows West Coast offense. Would that make any fans happy?
