Cool Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

I'm looking for a little advice from those that played college golf or those that tried to or those that just have the answers to what I'm about to ask, ha

I have a nephew who is a Jr. in high school and would like to start "marketing" himself to colleges and try to get a gold scholarship. He may be able to compete at a school like ISU, Iowa or Drake, but his chances are probably better at DII or DIII school.

Any advice out there? Any recommendations on how to market yourself, contact coaches, etc........???? Thanks for any advice

Re: Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

I know for soccer my sister went to the actual athletic website and filled out like a survey about herself. Then soon enough schools started contacting her and scouting. It might be the same way for golf, so I would go to each schools athletic website and she if there is something like that.

Re: Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

If he goes to a high school that has produced college golfers in the past, his high school golf coach will be his best liason to college programs.

Div III does not have athletic scholarships so I'm not sure any marketing is required. If a Div III coach wants a player he might be able to steer some academic scholarship his way. Central does this in football, for example, but I doubt it's very common in golf.

Cool Re: Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

His high school golf coach has a "funnel" to Simpson college. Same as Central, they don't offer athletic scholarships but if your grades are good enough they offer academc scholarships although you're coming to play golf.

He is eyeing Simpson but has dreams to get into a bigger program.

I don't know about golf, but in some sports, recruits make videos and send it to coaches.

Re: Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

I played HS golf and though about playing at ISU. One of the big things is going to the golf CAMPS they have every summer. You can learn there and it gets your name in front of the coaches.

At the time (and I'm guessing if anything it's worse now due to title 9) ISU had like 2-3 scholarships which they split up (typically to upper class men as a reward). I was asked to walk on at ISU, but I didn't want to until I got the feel of college classes (I was never a great student and thought college would be really hard...as it turns out I never studied any more than HS and got same grades). By the time I got a year into ISU I really didn't have the desire anymore.

Central and Drake both offered me some sort of "financial aid / scholarship" but I had a cousin that went to Central with money from football and after 2 years they pulled his money since it would have been a pain for him to transfer. So don't count on that money being there all the time. Also, I had no desire to go to either school...my mom loved Central because it was "dry"...I had no idea until we got there on our visit.

Long story, go to camps...don't expect any money or help unless you can play for a D-1 school in the south. Golf is a tough road unless you're really good it's an expensive habit with little chance of making a living at it. And the idea of being a 'club pro' is a back up idea...but trust me when it's a job it's a lot less fun.

    Good luck to him.

That would be cool. Start with a picture of him standing on the first tee and finish with him walking off the 18th green. Splice a bunch of video of Tiger Woods in between. Guaranteed to get him a scholarship or at least a good chuckle.

Re: Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

I work for a community college and I know many times students will contact the athletic office with a phone call or by looking up the coaches email. At least it gets the communication lines open. I'm sure something similar could be done for many schools.

Re: Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

Statewide tournaments are HUGE. If he is truly looking to play college golf he needs to devote his summers to playing and traveling to the big tournaments across Iowa. It's super expensive to travel with gas these days and these tournaments aren't cheap either, but if he can compete with the best in this state coaches will notice him. Getting to the state tournament is also a huge recruiting tool. All of the top programs in Iowa are there scouting kids. He should join the IJGA (Iowa Junior Golf Association) and the IGA (Iowa Golf Association). You can do this by going to iowagolf.org and signing up for these tournaments. As for receiving scholarships to play D-III, I know from my experience I received a "special grant,"which was basically a scholarship.

Re: Golf Recruiting Questions - "How To"

If he wants to stay around Iowa then definatley play the big IGA events. If IF he can get into one I would recommend attempting to qualify for an AGJA tournaments. College golf has a small recruiting budget so alot of the coaches just look up the scores and recruit from there. I was lucky enough to qualify for a few in high school and was getting letters as soon as the first tournament was over.

He could start by winning the State Tournament for his HS class. That would get his name out to what few people read the RAG.
