    If you were JP...

Disregarding whether you endorse or contest the continued tenure of Dan McCarney, if you were the AD at ISU and you had the challenge of hiring a new football coach what would your selection criteria be and how would you prioritize those criteria?

    Example catagories for criteria:
    Recruiting experience
    Coaching background
    Playing background
    Offensive philosophy
    Defensive philosophy
    etc.

For example would your top priority be a coach with head coaching experience, an NFL assistant, or a young coordinator from a Division 1 program?

Would you want someone with midwest recruiting ties? Would recruiting ability be more important than coaching experience?

What defensive and offensive philosophy would you look for?

    Re: If you were JP...

Well, i'm not sure how this fits in those categories but I would want a coach that can WIN. I would look at record (win percentage) and also look at what happened in close games. Does the coach win a high percentage of OT games. Does the coach win games decided by 7 or less. These are the things that drive me crazy with the current staff. While it is obvious that recruiting, etc are all important items, if a coach has a decent win percentage and can win the close ones, then that coach has a system that works. I'm looking for coaching ability. I'm tired of hearing "we were out coached today".

This may sound crazy, but I think a "gimmick" type scheme (that works, read TTech and Leach) may appeal to our market, to generate some excitement besides wins and losses.

Of course, I would much rather have a better win loss with a more traditional scheme, but with our resources, etc, it may not be a bad idea.

This approach has had more than some success with the team that just beat us.

A gimmick offense - like Walden's triple option?

An old football coach from isu(will remain nameless) told me: You cant play what you cant recruit.

A coach that can recruit better than 11th place in the big 12 is an absolute necessity. And for crying out loud lets finish the football stadium so it doesnt look like a 1AA football facility!

    Re: If you were JP...

based upon your post of criteria:

can we sell tickets and fill JTS with this coach?
runs a clean program and graduates players?
can we expect high expections every year?
does he " rebuild" every year or does he reload?

    Re: If you were JP...

I'm sure that a triple option offense with competent players would work. It just didn't for us because we seemed to spend about half the plays tossing the ball back 30 yards for either a turnover or an insurmountably long distance to get a first down. And I think you need a good defense to go with it - you'll never use the triple option to win a shootout.

Now whether or not it is sufficiently exciting to draw crowds, that may be a different matter!

    Re: If you were JP...

I don't think the triple option was our biggest problem under Walden. During his tenure it seemed that we had no ability to hold on to a lead in the 4th quarter, no matter how large it was. Our lack of depth on defense, coupled with not being good in the first place, cost us often.

Walden or Mac? That analogy fits both to a tee.

This year is not a good year to judge, since we lost so many on that side of the ball. I thought the media had over-inflated expectations of our program. You just don't automatically replace that many players without a drop off, unless you are a perenially power. I can't complain too much about our defense this year, although it's gets frustrating to observe the cushion we give to recievers, and the phases of the game when we can't seem to tackle anybody.

This year it's the offense that has really been disappointing to me. We should be doing much better. Hopefully we will see some better play in the remaining weeks of our schedule.

    Re: If you were JP...

I thought the media AND fans overhyped the team before the season. That's natural. I think half the battle in tackling is being in the right place to start with. If you are always in the wrong spot and trying to recover, you end up with some bad angles on the play. The offense has been the real disappointment to me also. I came into the season expecting 7-5 or 8-4 if things went well, but I was also expecting our losses to be 42-35 or something like that. At this point, I thinking they're playing for next year...to get the bad taste out of everyone's mouth. I think there are a lot of good kids with talent. They just need an offensive scheme that works with what they have.

    Re: If you were JP...

The execution of the triple option generally sucked - which was a problem. The lack of defense put the nail in the coffin.

I suppose that with the new clock rules and a good defense, that style of offense could be effective in shortening the game against better opponents.

    Re: If you were JP...

Not even Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, etc., runs ANY kind of an option on a regular basis. Even the Buffalo defense nowadays is quick enough to sniff that out (which means we're also quick enough to sniff it out but they'd gain buko yards due to our arm tackling)
