    Thursday Practice....

Did anyone see that Bates hit Wallace Franklin for a 65 yard td.....

Thats right WALLACE FRANKLIN......can someone please give us some good info on him....i was so high on his speed when we signed him, and then suddenly didnt produce.....i thought his speed would be dangerous to keep defenses honest and i thought it went untapped last year.....

Who is Joel Zitek??? I see hes got good size, they indicated he had caught a 15 yard pass from AA, so everything that ISU33 has said is dead on - this is a tight race.....

One thing i loved reading was from Coach Mac and several of the players that are indicating exactly what we all seen on the field last year.....and really should provide us a great optimism for the future....

Last year, there were so many things that were new, systems, players, not having players to fill roles, i think our team struggled trying to adapt at so many things and not having any other teachers besides the coaches....

Now we have coaches and players that are recognizing the formations, the changes, the system needs and wants, the reactions without thinking about the reaction....as our teams knowledge increases, it only speeds up the training process of the new guys.....i hope some of the guys coming in can challenge for playing time (especially at DB) But, in looking at our roster, we have talented players that know the system and they may be less talented then our recruits but by the time the system is understood by our freshmen, the season is long underway....

I'm going on record already as saying this - What i witnessed last year in the first game of the season, packed JTS, and see a team like Kent St roll on us, that will not happen!!!!

South Dakota St and Kent St get rolled.....mark those words....the zips will have Edelman back for his senior season and that bodes well for them, but their defense will be weakened by graduations and the defense Endelman will face will be vastly more knowledgeable then the one he faced with the Vanilla package last year where it seemed every wr they had was running wide open at some point.....Can never underestimate the affects of a defense thats not sure where, when or how they should react to a play or formation....a lot of busted coverage's and assignments....

    I cant wait!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Thursday Practice....

Wallace will get some good PT this year, he is just so thin that about all we can use him for is a deep threat, and that he will be. He made some good catches in practice today. As far as the race being tight, i can tell you that Arnaud puts some good zip on his short passes, Bates has good touch, not quite as much power on the short passes, but for deep passes, Bates has a really good feel for exactly where to throw it, and he can get it up there, Both QBs have shown good technique in footwork, ect. Bates is killer on the run, passing and taking off... he has wheels.

It'll be interesting to see in the fall. However, personally, I refuse to employ any sort of optimism before the first game.

    Arnaud/Bates = Leak/Tebow? ;)

I'd love to see how we could use a system like that.

The long ball to current Husker Niles Paul was Bates calling card in high school. They connected on a number of 30 + yard receptions.

I agree. I have never been a fan of the two QB system.

Me. either. It's hard to be a part-time leader.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

    Re: Thursday Practice....

When Spurrier first started the two QB system at Florida it was an absolute disaster and caused a huge division in the team. The linemen all sided with Palmer because he treated them well (kissed their butts) and the skill players all sided with Johnson. They were pretty similar players as they were dropback passers but Johnson had a better arm and Jesse was a little better at checking down. With Bates and Arnaud being similiar players I fear a two QB system might cause a division in the team.

    Re: Thursday Practice....

As someone mentioned earlier Bates to Paul in HS was a sure thing. Some will say that kNU didn't want Bates "wasn't any good." The fact is he didn't fit Callahan's dream of a pro type QB.

Bates was a great "all-purpose" QB in HS and I'd love to see him have a great career just to rub it in to people in this state about the one that got away.

    I like the analogy but I think I would go with Arnaud/Bates <= Leak/Tebow

    Re: Thursday Practice....

    I'm torn here....

AA - We've seen him play and know he has the ability to make big plays with his arm....the essence of a spread offense. How many times has a Texas Tech QB burnt a team with his legs? How many rushing yards did Colt Brennen have last year? But at the same time, having a qb that can add a threat to the spread with the ability to tuck it when theres nothing open has to be inviting to the coaches if everything else is equal.

Bates - If he don't get the starting nod, does he move positions, does he stay and sit (one of our best athletes sitting?) or does he transfer? I think the guy is an incredible talent and we all want to see him on the field in one manner or another...

    Last tidbit.....

Since Chizik and MacFarland have been here they've recruited three qb's, two are mobile and able to improvise type players and one was a true drop back passer. So which direction is the offense going? Now AA may not have the wheels the other two have, but, he's been in the mix and performed well. It will be interesting to see how this develops and then throw in the mix Tiller come fall, and it should be something we've not had here in a long long time. Multiple TALENTED guys who all could run the team, but, which is best qualified and able to perform....it should be fun!!!!!
