    Des Moines Bus Drivers

Bus-pedestrian crash is third in 9 months | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

Another person hit downtown again. If you drive the metro area you know these buses (even some of the school buses too!) sometimes are not very courtious to other drivers. They usually drive too fast, cut people off when changing lanes, and run red lights at times. There is no reason 3 people should get hit by a bus in 9 months downtown. I know they are on time schedules but for the sake of other drivers and pedestrians they need to be a little more safe even if it means losing a couple minutes.

    Re: Des Moines Bus Drivers

The first was a client my wife's and apparently he started crossing against the light and also wearing earphones.

The 1 line goes right down my street. I have never noticed any problems with the bus drivers or their driving habits.

Apparently this one was the drivers fault. But I see far more stupid pedestrians than I see dumb stuff by drivers.

I'm personally more concerned about the guys running the MetroWaste trucks.

I hate those MTA buses, they think they own the road.

Thank you. The bus drivers are the ones trying to pay attention to their surroundings. Don't be so quick to give so much credit to the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed pedestrians that always look where they are going.

Sorry, I work for CyRide when I'm at school so I know what it's like to drive a bus through a pedestrian crowded area.

Go downtown and hang out in the plaza for ahwile. Especially in the morning and around 4 pm. You'd be amazed what some people do down there. It's amazing that more people haven't been hit. Some people run in between buses to the other side of the street. Just so they can stand over there and wait for their next bus. I wouldn't want that job.

    Re: Des Moines Bus Drivers

I believe the 2nd person hit was the driver's fault too. Apparently the person was crossing when they were supposed to and the bus driver tried taking a left turn on red on a 1 way street. I know not all the drivers are bad but I'm always careful around them cuz I've seen near accidents far too often because the bus just cuts out with no signal or regard to the traffic around them.

Can't that be said for a lot of drivers on the road?

I was looking out of my office window when this happened. I didn't realize the guy was blind until I read the story.

Oops. I'll eat some crow for that one.

My point is still valid though (generally).

    Re: Des Moines Bus Drivers

My brother got canned by CyRide following an accident in which a driver turned in front of him. He was very upset, but he said that they let him go because even though it wasn't his fault they thought he could have avoided being hit period.

This woman has had 9 accidents. It seems to me there is a big difference in leniency between DART / CyRide - Union / Non-Union bus drivers here.

    Re: Des Moines Bus Drivers

I have to admit to being one of those that once in awhile jaywalks. I get to downtown between 6-6:30 so the traffic is light. I've never came close to being hit in the 6 years that I've been downtown. There are times where I think it's actually more dangerous to cross at the crosswalk because you have the people turning right on red.

Funny story is that about 2 months ago a cop said something to me about jaywalking. I thought he was joking or something.

People who turn right on red (bus or otherwise) are probably the biggest hazard to pedestrians or others.

When riding my bike to and from work, I don't have many trouble at all on the roads - with the exception of the ever present a-hole who thinks it's his road, and his alone.

The biggest problem is when trying to cross on intersection in the crossing lanes and motorists trying to turn right on red, but pay no attention to the crossing and are looking to the left for oncoming traffic. Maybe 1 in 10 motorists stop short of the walk, if they stop at all.

True but bus vs car or car vs car, I'd rather take my chances with the car as you probably won't win the battle with the bus.

I feel pretty safe riding the bus. I'm sure a lot of it has to do w/ the fact we're bigger than most everything else.
