Why we are doomed as a country.

AT&T CEO says hard to find skilled U.S. workers - Yahoo! News

I see this all the time where I work. So many people have no skills or common sense, and I'm talking about even people in their 40s or 50s, who should have developed something from life. We're doomed as a country. Not being pessimistic, just realistic. An awful lot of people have no aspirations, no education, and are totally happy about it.

Re: Why we are doomed as a country.

We took our 2 year old to a BD party at Chucky Cheese the other day and the HS girl that helped us get those stupid gifts you buy with the tickets you win had to use a calculator to subract 10 from 100. Its a sad state we are in.
The worse part is those people that have no aspirations, no education, and are totally happy about it, will ***** and moan for us that do work our butts off to help them out and make us feel sorry for them.

What do you expect? Idiots telling people that spanking is bad for your kids self confidence! Teachers being stripped of any power over the kids for risk of losing their jobs or being sued! And primarily because of the previous two sentences, kids have 0% respect for authority and want to divorce their parents for making them mow the lawn. Anything to do with God is taken out of the schools, gov't offices. Christians can't pray in school but the Muslims and Buddhists and any other nutjob religion can say prayers at public function!

Hell, we're two generations away from becoming cannibals....

I'm a ISU engineering grad and the other day I pulled up my calculator for something really stupid ... like 32-12 ... even as the answer popped up I was looking over my shoulder hoping no one else was looking.

There have been dumb people for a long time, and they breed quickly, but I don't think we're in dire straits just yet. Also I don't think those of us that scoff are quite as smart as we think we are.

I'll be really worried when the White House has a First Lady named either Brittany or Paris...

What he says is true. At my HS christians can't pray or have any religous meetings/groups but the muslims get their own room to do their prayer to the east(west?) thing and get school off during ramadahn (spelling?). Heck half the kids at my HS don't even stand up for the pledge of allegiance, I don't care who you are or what religion you are, that's just wrong.

Still seems wrong to assume that every faith other than Christianity is considered a "nut job religion". I don't claim to know everything about muslims, but if they have a certain time of day that they need to do prayer, why discriminate against it -- especially if they would otherwise have to leave campus to do so?

I think in some aspects our society is getting too politically correct for its own good, but restricting prayer to a private thing in schools is not one of them. They "take God" out of schools for the same reasons they don't display signs and symbols of the Muslim and Buddhist faith in the classroom. Who says you can't have a Christian prayer group at school? Okay, you can't do it as a mandate before class starts every day, but my high school had a morning prayer group every day outside on the front steps. If your high school doesn't allow it, maybe they need to re-examine their priorities... or if you're assuming this, you need to look further into your school's prayer policies.

Part of the problem is that companies stink at hiring the right people. The people I consider my peers (those, like me, who survived the "work quake" in the early '90s) are all smart, educated, adaptable people who are, like me, constantly in job turmoil, because most of us don't "fit" in the itty-bitty boxes that modern companies expect their employees to fit into.

It is even worse in Central Iowa, because the typical HR manager is looking for someone who is 22 years old, and has 30 years experience doing one, pathetically simple thing.

90% of employers in our market don't want to hire a 40-something who is extremely talented, and is willing to take a step down in wage in order to live in the area. And, oh, yeah, he/she hasn't done the job you're hiring for for decades, but because the company is too lazy/thinks too short term to allow for a quick train up/grow into a job, some goober who is technically qualified, on paper, gets hired nearly 100% of the time. And the CEO gets to gripe about not enough skilled workers being available to hire.

Hey, the Army doesn't expect you to know the job before you get it. They expect you to grow INTO the job, and learn it as you go. Maybe modern bidness could learn something from that.

This is my personal rant. I've lived this dream.
