    The Arnaud/Bates QB duel...

Does the "loser" (i don't like using that term here) of the QB battle get used elsewhere around the field? They are both good athletes, especially Bates, and if Arnaud straight up is the better QB does Bates get used like Kordell Stewart in his first few seasons in Pittsburgh? I mean, if we have a guy that can play 3 different positions on offense flying around out there on reverses, wr passes, reverse wr passes, etc, etc, it seems to me that it could take our offense to a whole new level. With the talent Phillip Bates has you would think we'll find a way to get him on the field. That being said, if Bates won the battle, I think Arnaud is also a good enough athlete to find a home on the field too. For once we seem to have a plethora of talent at a vital position...

    Re: The Arnaud/Bates QB duel...

I'm not sure Arnaud is fast enough to play anywhere else? But if Bates is truly the best QB, then you have to play him and Arnaud would be just the back up.

If Arnaud, wins it outright then we have a problem. The only way I would risk playing Bates elsewhere is if Tiller would come in and prove he could be serviceable this year.

    Re: The Arnaud/Bates QB duel...

Neither will play a different position this year, unless Tiller comes in and shows he can be a quality back up. Even then I doubt it. Arnaud is a QB, and he will not play any other positions while at ISU. Now Bates is talented enough to play WR as we have seen and could make the change but I am guessing that move would come next year if at all.

    Re: The Arnaud/Bates QB duel...

I feel that Arnaud is the hands down starter for next season. I do not know what is going on in practices or how much bates has gotten better since last season but I feel we would have seen bates at QB last year and do something other than a bootleg. Arnaud is a hell of an athlete and has a great arm. Arnaud is the starting QB for the season and bates will play different positions, mainly wide reciever, like he did last year especially against Iowa. This is all just my opinion.

Watching them practice on Clone Zone, Arnaud definitely slings it in there harder than Bates, but Bates throws well on the run.

    Re: The Arnaud/Bates QB duel...

I think that Arnaud is a QB for good. He could probably play some TE/HB or DE, but that is a major transition and it won't happen. Bates could easily play WR or S. I really think that if Arnaud claims the starting spot, Bates will still see a series or two at QB, but also several plays a game at WR. Of course, that all depends on what the staff thinks of Tiller. If he is able to play in an emergency, giving Bates some snaps at WR really can't hurt...chances are he won't get hurt in limited snaps there.

If Arnaud continues to tighten his grip on the starting spot, I think that as soon as there is solid depth at QB (fall 2009), Bates will switch to WR or FS full time.

I would love to use Bates in a 'wild hog' formation.

    Re: The Arnaud/Bates QB duel...

Let's pose a different question...why exactly will we have to switch one of them? Recent history has shown teams having success utilizing a dual-QB system (Leak and Tebow, Perriloux and Flynn), with one fast QB (Bates) and a slower QB (Arnaud).

Bates is here to play QB. Arnaud is here to play QB. 33 indicated in a recent thread that Bates is coming on hard. No matter who wins, I see both players putting in time at QB this season.

    Re: The Arnaud/Bates QB duel...

We know Arnaud is more than capable (see last season playing on an injured leg). So if Bates is CLOSE.. we are in good shape.

I agree with this. In 2006, Arnaud was the backup even though he redshirted. Fortunately, he was never needed as Meyer played the whole season. I can see something like this happening with Arnaud and Tiller. Bates will be used as a WR, and Arnaud will be the starter. Austen doesn't really seem to fit in at any other position.

Would you care to place a bet on that? There is no way a guy as athletic as Bates holds a clipboard all year if he isn't the #1 guy.

Then how about the term "backup"?

I think it will definitely be a situation similar to Seneca Wallace on the Seahawks. Seneca is a proven backup, but also a terrible athletic talent to waste away on the sidelines when he could be playing some downs at WR or returning punts/kicks. Of course, they rarely use him in those roles because they don't want to risk him getting hurt and not having a proven backup. I think for the past couple years Seattle has been trying to get a viable 3rd string quarterback ready so they have an insurance policy when they put Seneca in. Same with ISU, the only way we'll truly be able to utilize the backup QB in other roles is if a 3rd guy (Tiller or other) proves capable.

Having 2 good QBs is a good problem to have.
