    Barrent Article in Yahoo

6-7 290 best in Iowa prospect:
Barrent one of Iowa's best - NCAA Football - Yahoo! Sports

    Barrent one of Iowas best

By Jeremy Crabtree, Recruiting Editor Mar 24, 11:18 am EDT

When discussing the top player in Iowa, its not too often that West Des Moines (Iowa) Valley offensive tackle David Barrents name comes up. But maybe it should.
Throughout the nation, many amazing looking players have attended the Rivals.com Five-Star Academy events.
But when Barrent walked through the door at two weeks ago at Michigan State, he was one of the most put together players so far on the tour. Barrent measured in at 6-foot-7 and 290 pounds, plus he looked like he had a frame that could easily hold another 20 pounds and still look great.
I think I have some athleticism, Barrent said. I used to play basketball and sports like that have helped my quickness. I try to speed train as much as I can. I use my quickness on the line, along with some power, too.
Barrent said hes happy with where hes at now physically, but isnt totally satisfied.

Im hitting the weight room really hard now, he said.
We go four times a week, and I try to get in on the weekends once a week. I also go to Acceleration Iowa. Its like a program that helps you get even more trained. Im doing that three times a week, so Im trying to get a lot faster and a lot stronger. Right now, doing track its got me off track a little bit because Im throwing, but Im still working hard to get ready.
Helping cement Barrents stock as one of the states best is also an impressive offer list.
Ive got six offers now, he said. Ive got offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Northwestern, Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan State. Its a lot of fun to see whats going on.
The two in-state schools definitely have something positive to offer Barrent.
I really like Iowa because theyve talked to me the longest, Barrent said. They started sending me stuff at the beginning of last season. I went to a couple of their games, so I know the coaching staff really well. Its just a really nice place. I just have always kind of liked Iowa growing up.
With Iowa State, I really like how they have more of a family type atmosphere with their coaching staff. I actually like stuff like that. Its really become comfortable to me.
The out of state schools are also right in the thick of things.
I made a visit to the University of Illinois and looked at the academic facilities and everything, Barrent said. I went to the engineering college to meet up with them and stuff. I talked to one of the coaches and saw one of their early morning speed workouts, agility drills in their indoor.
Ive been up to Northwestern, and Im making another visit up there soon. I kind of like what they have to offer at Michigan State. I like their campus and I really like their engineering program and the coaches. It sounds like a real good deal all around.

All he talks about is doing engineering, I think ISU would be a better fit for that.

I know Mich St (not sure about Northwestern or Illinois) has a good engineering program (of course I'm biased to ISU).

I'm hoping it comes down to: 1) wanting to stay closer to home (leaving Iowa or ISU), and 2) wanting to do engineering (leaving us).

Does it bother anybody else when they see a potential recruit wearing another schools colors? Maybe it's just the fact he's wearing Squakeye crap but I can't stand reading about recruits then see a picture of them wearing the other teams colors.

He talks about the engineering college at Illinois and the engineering progam at Michigan State. Sounds like he is really interested it that. I think ISU has one of the best so it would be nice to keep him here.

Illinois has an excellent engineering program. But he'd be best served by staying home

We've always recruited Valley well. But he might be a lil different than most others. Hopefully he could be swayed with several WDV alumni on the roster.

I guess the fact that his sister goes to ISU doesn't bank much with me. If I was a D1 stud FB player .... where my sister went would NOT influence me at all. Maybe thats just me.

    True, but it can't hurt.

"I think that people are responding to someone standing up and saying this is what we want to do and let's not be afraid to go for it,'' Pollard said. "I think Iowa State has a very conservative, modest background. We never pound our chest and say `Let's do it.' It's OK to set a goal. You can't do it if you don't say what you want to do. You should be proud of it.''
