    Wood is the Cubs' Closer

The Official Site of The Chicago Cubs: News: Wood appointed as Cubs' closer

This is the part that scares the crap outta me:

Ryan Dempster and Jason Marquis also were tabbed for the two open spots in the rotation, with Jon Lieber designated for the bullpen.
    Better score some runs boy.

    *insert dumb Cubs joke here*

Re: Wood is the Cubs' Closer

So I'm guessing by that comment that you think that Dempster and Marquis are going to give up a lot of runs? I don't know about you but I haven't been more excited about a Cubs pitching staff since '03. It is as deep as I can remember and they finally have quality lefties. Oh, and by the way, this was the 2nd best pitching staff in the league last year and all they did in the off-season was add Jon Leiber. Sounds like a lot of wins to me.

I will reiterate: RYAN DEMPSTER AND JASON MARQUIS.

Yes, I do think this rotation will give up a lot of runs.

The dumb Cubs joke part was for all of the haters that hate the Cubs yet feel the need to contribute negatively to all Cubs threads.

Re: Wood is the Cubs' Closer

I guess I forgot that the Cubs are the only team in baseball to have questionable 4th and 5th statrters.

FWIW, I believe Dempster has pitched pretty well this spring. He's a good contact type pitcher. He'll give up some runs but he'll keep you in the ballgame and give you a good 6 innings. That's why he sucked at closing.

As a Cards fan who dealt with Marquis' boneheadedness for 3 years, I agree. Expect him to give up a lot of runs.

I am not trying to be an *** here, but where in the world do you get the idea that Dumpster is a good starting pitching option. Just curious.

Cardinal fans should know a lot about 4th and 5th starters being they have about 7 of them this year.

I understand that you aren't trying to be a dick and I respect your opinion. Maybe the fact that I think Dempster is going to be fine as a starter is because he couldn't have done worse as a closer. Maybe this fresh start in the rotation with help his confidence and he doesn't have to be relied on to win games in the 9th. Also, I am probably your typical sports fan, not just a Cubs fan, that thinks my team is going to be great at the start of every season.

I would love it if you are right and would cheer loudly for him. I just don't think it is going to happen. I honestly think he will be out of the rotation by June and back in the bullpen.

I know. And our 1-3, with the possible exception of Adam Wainwright, aren't that hot either.

Awesome isn't he that guy that just pitched in DSM for the Iowa Cubs in 2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006 and 2007!

I would rather have Dumpster in the pen. That way he has less innings to screw things up.

He was good for advertisting dollars, though. Nobody could afford to turn away when the game was his. Couldn't watch, either, but couldn't turn away. The ads were like a welcome relief
