    Passenger Van Rental

I am way out in front of when I need it, but I was trying to plan ahead to show family members cost. So we are thinking of renting a Passenger Van for 8 people to drive down to Florida and back needing the van for 8 days. I called Enterprise and they have nothing in Des Moines bigger than a minivan. I called 4 dealerships and Gabus is the only place having an 11 passenger for $729 for 7 days and 2000 mile limit with 25 cents per mile over that. Does anyone have any experience with this and know of any other places with possibly better prices? Thanks Fanatics!!!

How well do you like the family?

I bet you could get a U Haul and some lawn chairs for less than that.

you might be able to find an 8 passenger Suburban, but you better have 3 or more small passengers for the back. It also might have a DVD for entertainment.

    Re: Passenger Van Rental

Been years and years. But when I was in school we were faced with a similar dilema for a trip to Buffalo. The school vans were a crazy amount given the mileage.

In the end we rented two Lincoln Towncars from Hertz or Avis or somebody, and came out well ahead - if you have enough drivers.

Did you call Stew Hansens? I thought they rented vans.

That sounds kind of pricey to me. I have to rent them all the time for work and they only run us around $350 per week with unlimited miles (In State Only though). Of course we are getting a deal through the Enterprise Entertainment Division. I'm surprised Des Moines doesn't have any pass vans through them.

    Re: Passenger Van Rental

I would avoid the large 15 passenger vans at all costs. They are very rollover prone especially on long trips where fatigue and unfamiliar roads come into play.

    +10000

Even the 11 passenger vans are dangerous, especially if you've loaded them heavy in the rear or up high.

    Re: Passenger Van Rental

U-Save in Ames rents out 15 passenger vans. I checked the prices, looks like $70/day, and I'm pretty sure they have a weekly rate as well. Used to rent out those for church youth trips until the church insurance stopped covering them due to the safety hazard. Never had a problem with them though - usually took out the back seat. Discount car Rental from Usave.

    Re: Passenger Van Rental

I've used Dewey Ford in Ankeny several times. They've been very good to me in regards to 15 passenger van rentals. I'm not sure what other types of vehicles they have to rent, but definitely worth the call.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Had a similar situation a few years ago and I was shocked how hard large passenger vans were to find. Seemed to me that would be one of the most common reasons to rent a vehicle. Guess I was wrong.

We ended up doing what someone else suggested on here: renting a giant U-Haul and putting furniture in the back. It was totally illegal and not real comfortable, but it was a bunch of drunk guys so no one really cared.

    Re: Passenger Van Rental

A trip to Florida with 11 people in the back of a u-haul sounds like one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.
