    RateMyCop.com

Has anybody used the website RateMyCop.com - Home?

Users can search for officers by name, department or state and give them up to five stars based on professionalism, fairness and overall satisfaction during an encounter.

Some law enforcement officials are seeking legislation to shut down the website.

    Re: RateMyCop.com

I don't have a problem with the website, but some of the department include addresses of the officers. THAT I have a problem with. It seems to make police officers more of a target, imo.

It's a dumb site that won't last long. The police organizations complaining about it are the only reason it even gets any attention.

    Re: RateMyCop.com

There are sites like rate my doctor, rate my lawyer, rate my teacher, and so forth. The idea behind the website is that we are taxpayers. We pay for the service that’s provided, so why can’t we give feedback on that service?

The objection to the site is what Phaedrus mentioned, it potentially puts officers in danger because it reports their names and agencies, the raw material for further Internet research by those with the intent to harm.

Its actually a very popular website. To date it has been shut down temporarily but only because too many users were attempting to access the web site at once.

We'll see how popular it is this time next year.

The idea behind the site is flawed. People only complain about cops and the reviews will only be negative. It's the same as if there was a ratemyfireman.com, all the reviews would be positive.

You would think that the majority of the reviews would be negative but that is not the case.

The average rating since Feb. 28, the site’s first day online, has been 3.7 stars.

Many users gave high marks and thank officers for being helpful or professional.

My bet would be that officers are rating themselves then. Families could also be involved.

I belong to another site that has a high proportion of police officers. They are VERY active on Ratemycop, either dogging each other, or trying to boost their own ratings.

Most of those guys appear to like it, because they have an "interesting" sense of humor, and it's fun to post negative stuff on each other without legal recourse.

But they don't particularly like being more of a public figure than they already are.
