    Reinstalling XP

Ok, I have stored everything on an external hard drive and even created a recovery CD just in case. Anything I should know about wiping XP off and reinstalling it? I have the original CD and assume I can use this to do the job. I'm hoping that the CD provides a reinstall option. I also then hope that the PC will go out and look for all of the many XP updates that I have gotten over the past few years. Am I doing too much hoping and assuming?!

Why reinstall it? I think I'm missing something.

    Re: Reinstalling XP

Delete the partitions and recreate them. Then do the through format and that should be all you need. Make sure you atleast have your network card driver handy. In case you need to download other drivers.

    Re: Reinstalling XP

Things are a bit fracked up and I worked with a helpful CFer a couple of months a go for a while to try and fix them to no avail. The theory then was that the best way to go was start fresh. It just took me this long to get everything backed up .

Yes scan your files with an updated/ new virus scan before you reinstall your back ups.

    Re: Reinstalling XP

You can also reinstall XP and keep your files, by hitting re-install/ repair XP, I believe when that comes on you toggle down one and hit the "R" for repair. The all your files are saved but XP is repaired

Put the CD in and restart the computer
the screen will say press any key to boot from CD, hit one to get it started

It will then load some drivers, then you will hit F8 to agree to the terms and conditions.

It will say you already have windows installed, choose to install a fresh copy.
This will bring you to the partion options. Highlight each one and press L to delete them. Then press C to create a new one(if you want more then one you can create more then one now)

Next screen will bring you to the formating options there is a standard option and a quick option go with the standard one(use NTFS file system if it asks you yo choose between FAT32 and it)
After it is done setup will copy some files to the computer then it will restart(don't boot to CD this time.

The rest of the install is pretty self explanatory

Do you have the drivers for the devices in your computer if not goto the manufactures web site input your model number and download drivers from there(do this before you install xp again)

    Re: Reinstalling XP

I absolutely don't say this to be insulting, but it seems like this isn't something that you feel real comfortable with. It might be a good idea to bring someone in to look at it that you feel comfortable with. It's not real difficult, but if it's not really your thing, it might make you feel better along the way to have someone you trust doing this for you.

    Re: Reinstalling XP

Nah, just want to make sure I dont get hung up in the process. I'd rather not do it but I'm not going to pay someone to. I'm just getting everything in order and noticed that what I thought was the windows key is apparently 5 letters/numbers short.

    Re: Reinstalling XP

There is no Produvt key needed for the Dell CD. But if you really want to know there is a windows sticker on your computer with the product key on it. As long as you have the dell drivers CD you should be good to go.

You will not need a product key if it is a dell. It auto installs it. Just use the recovery CD, it saves hours of time looking for drivers.
