Vermont Supreme Court deciding if prison food is punishment

On Monday, the Vermont Supreme Court will hear arguments in a class action suit brought by inmates who say what they are given to eat is not food but punishment.

Prisoners that act up in prison are given nutraloaf- a mixture of cubed whole wheat bread, nondairy cheese, raw carrots, spinach, seedless raisins, beans, vegetable oil, tomato paste, powdered milk and dehydrated potato flakes.

Nutraloaf and its equivalents have been used for decades in prisons across the country. In 1978, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a concoction used in Arkansas known as "'grue' might be tolerable for a few days and intolerably cruel for weeks or months."

A federal judge ruled in 1988 that the use of nutraloaf by the Michigan Department of Corrections was punishment.

Now, Michigan inmates are only given nutraloaf after going through the disciplinary process that lands them in segregation, department spokesman Russ Marlan said.

whatever happened to the days of being chained in a cold, damp stone prison and being given stale bread and water

I'm not advocating that but seriously... STFU. If you don't want to eat it, don't throw your **** at the guard

Hmmm, these guys have given up their rights by committing a felony, and giving them nutritious healthy food like that is punishment? I bet a lot of people on the outside could use three squares a day of this.

I think everyone in CF can look forward to me posting my latest "nutraloaf" experiments.

And why should we care what prison inmates have to eat, as long as it is properly nutritious??? It would be unethical to starve people, but cover their nutritional needs and call it good.

You could make it a law that every prison inmate gets a bar of gold every day and they would sue for more.

I think we should feed them steak, potatoes, lobster, and all sorts of high class food. Only one catch. We should put it all in a blender and make em drink it through a straw.

Prison inmates have lots of time and a very well-equipped legal library, in most cases. And I think this story pretty much bears that out.
