    Should they expand the tournament?

I just saw a commercial thing with Jim Boeheim, and he did the traditional "We need to fin a way to expand this tournament" thing that excluded coaches seem to find a way to put out there.

Bob Knight last week on ESPN talked about getting rid of automatic qualifiers (probably having Cleveland State flashbacks still), and expanding the field to 128 teams.

Someone had the idea of a play-in game for each region.

    What do you think?

I certainly think they could expand to 4 play in games, or even 8 (using the traditional 15/16 seeds). Anything more than that I think you'd have to go up to 96 teams, with 32 getting a first round bye.

I think they should cut one team to get it back to 64. The play in game is a joke and a slap in the face to those that play in it.

Amen! I think that they should make the marginal "big-school" qualifiers play in that thing.

If you win your conference, you shouldn't be playing your way in. You already did.

Re: Should they expand the tournament?

If it was up to me I might expand to4 play in games but that is it. Granted sometimes a team doesn't belong and gets beat down by 40 points. But then other times a team shows they can play deserves the chance to be in the tournament. Plus it adds some fun to the tournament when an automatic bid from a little conference makes some noise.

Re: Should they expand the tournament?

Heck, why not include everyteam in the nation. That way the regular season is nothing but a joke. 64 teams is already water downed. I loved the statement that Dan Patrick made last week on this, "Until you have #15 and #16 seeds pulling off the upset more often, then there is no need to expand the field."

We all know when the last time a 15 beat a 2, but how about 16 and a 1 seed????

Of course Boeheim wants it expanded. He's been left out the past two seasons. It isn't a real tournament if Syracuse is not in it (his thoughts, of course).

Perhaps 3 play-in games...but no further expansion. I don't imagine the aura of March Madness would be as much with 128 schools making 'The Tourney'. The first rounds would be dead to me. Puts an even larger wedge between the high and low seeds.

    Good point

Early in the season, ESPN did call the regular season the field of 365 (or whatever. I lose track of the # of teams anymore).

Maybe they could just do like the bowls and have a game for nearly every team. Who wouldn't want to watch Northwestern take on Washington in a meaningless game that has no relevance to the Championship. And more TV ($$$) time for the NCAA. What's to lose?

So very true. What would they do? Add another weekend and 2 more rounds? Then you have The Field of 256! So the #1 vs #64 is going to make for a better game than 1vs16. It would be like 2 rounds of pre-season games. I don't think the tournament needs all the MEAC teams in it.

Great points. The day someone from the stupid play-in game takes down a 1 seed is the day I'll say the tournament needs further expansion.

Why not just combine it with the NIT and get rid of this two tourney stuff. Call the first couple of rounds the NIT and be done.

So, you mean, basically making the NIT kind of a play-in tournament? Interesting.............

I wasn't thinking that but that's a good idea. I was thinking more along the lines of one 96 team tournament. For money sake, proceeds from the first few rounds go to the NIT people and the "championship" rounds go to the NCAA.

Re: Should they expand the tournament?

Does anyone that has a legit shot to win it all really ever get left out? I do not like how it isn't even the 64 best but I guess it is nice to reward teams for winning their tournys. I think the 65th team is a joke, take away one at large bid and get it back to 64. Let all the team cry about not making it when in all actuallity they would not have won it anyway.
