    How people grade public schools

Citizens around the country were asked: "If you were grading the public schools where you live, and you could give the public schools either a passing grade or a failing grade how would you grade the public schools where you live?" Iowa fared remarkably well in this survey as the only state that recieved a higher pass rate was North Dakota. North Dakota received a 78 percent pass vote; Iowa, 71 percent; and South Dakota 71 percent. States where schools were given failing grades include: New Mexico (52%), Hawaii (51%), Nevada (47%), and Louisiana (47%).

That pretty unfortunate that Iowa has that high of a percentage. It's hard to tell on a pass/fail basis though. Iowa's national ranking has been dropping like a rock in the last decade or so, so I would say things are not going in the right direction. On a pass/fail basis, I guess I would say pass, but it would be a D-.

Re: How people grade public schools

I was a tour guide on campus for a while and once we had a group of grade schoolers come for the day. I believe they were 2nd or 3rd grade. Well, turns out their teacher told the kids he would give them extra recess time if they wore hawkeye stuff to their class visit to ISU.

For that reason, I give the grade schools an F. I thought that was completely immature of him and of course he thought it was hilarious. But I suppose you can't expect much more from a hawk fan.

I have a friend that was considering a job offer from a company in Hawaii. In the end he turned the offer down because he had kids and was concerned that they would suffer from the public schools there.

I live in Louisiana...if you are concerned about public schools...go with the private school alternative!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
