Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

Floyd gives Mac a thumbs up
Posted 3/19/2008 9:26 PM CDT on Des Moines Register
Omaha, Neb. — I got a little time to catch up with former Iowa State coach Tim Floyd after his NCAA session with the media at the Qwest Center today.

Eventually, the topic turned to Thursday's game between Floyd's Southern California team and Kansas State.

I asked Floyd if he had watched tape of Iowa State's game with the Wildcats earlier this month.

"I watched that one a lot,'' Floyd said.

In that game, Iowa State coach Greg McDermott came up with a strategy that denied Michael Beasley the ball and jammed Bill Walker's driving lanes to the basket.

Beasley scored just 15 points, his fewest in a Big 12 Conference game. His 12 shot attempts matched a season low. Walker scored just nine points.

    Floyd was impressed.

"That guy is a helluva coach,'' Floyd said. "You tell him I said that. He just doesn't have enough players yet.'

The Wildcats' Jacob Pullen scored 19 points in Kansas State's 73-69 victory. Floyd said he had a plan to slow down Pullen, too. Turn on the TV at 6 p.m. Thursday to see if it works.

Who should I listen to...Coach Floyd or the "experts" on CF? Tough call.

It's nice to see Mac getting some props.

The key is, can Gmac win in time to get players? I think he can.

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

Let me say up front that I'm 100% behind Coach McDermott. Love the guy and I hope he takes to prominence in the coming years. But, when a reporter asks a coach about another player/coach/whatever...what do you think he's going to say?

Reporter: "Coach Floyd, what do you think of Coach McDermott at Iowa State?"

Floyd "Terrible, terrible. Horrible coach, horrible program, I wish them the worst in the coming years."

I'm not saying Floyd's words weren't sincere, but come on, what do you honestly think professional athletes/coaches are going to be 100% honest in every sound bite they give?

The key to our team may be hard offseason workouts on their own. I still think SH and CB will improve shooting under pressure. If rebounding will be down from the last two years, we will have to shoot better than 42% to make any noise in the league.

How about we set a trend here at ISU and wait.. yes wait until Mac gets his players. Floyd said it, he just doesn't have enough players yet, that's all I need to hear. Patients... that's what it takes.

"I think that people are responding to someone standing up and saying this is what we want to do and let's not be afraid to go for it,'' Pollard said. "I think Iowa State has a very conservative, modest background. We never pound our chest and say `Let's do it.' It's OK to set a goal. You can't do it if you don't say what you want to do. You should be proud of it.''

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

It would have been pretty easy for Floyd to just say "I don't really know much about him. Blah, blah, blah."

    Really, I thought it was:

Patients: individuals awaiting or under medical care and treatment or recipients of any of various personal services

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. ~ George Carlin

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

Floyd has mentioned Mac as a good coach before. I can't remember where I heard it though.

Mac will be given ample time. That won't be a problem.

Wouldn't patients be the people that are in medical facilities?

Note that Floyd says he needs players. The question is whether he can get them or not.

I don't think any of the "experts" thought Mac didn't know basketball or x's and o's. The question has always been can he get the bodies to be competitive.

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

The key to what Floyd says is "he just doesn't have enough players". I don't think anyone has ever critisized if the guy can coach. But the criticism has been whether or not he can get the players. Cause it is painfully obvious we have very few. The verdict is out on this incoming class. On paper there not highly thought of. Hopefully 1 or 2 are studs. His 09 class is going to be make or break. 1 or 2 more 15 win seasons is going to mean the exit for McD. I think people are willing to give McD time. But 4 years should be more than enough. If we don't start winning more games especially by 09, then i'm sure Pollard and Co. will start looking a new direction.

Uh... that's exactly what you said.

Why can't some people just take a compliment for what it is???? Let's stop being so "glass is half empty" folks. A very well respected coach was asked if he watched ISU's game against KSU. He answered the question and went even further (on his own accord) and praised McD. Then... let me get this straight... we can't just accept it and feel compelled to basically say he's just praising McD to be nice. Huh???

The guy has had 1 full recruiting class. Even then he was slightly behind the 8-ball because you are recruiting guys 2-3 years in advance these days.
