    Those crazy Cubbies!

Came across this and found it amusing...

(From Fox Sports Radio's Ben Mallar)

Cubs' Strength and conditioning coach Tim Buss experienced the agony and the ecstasy of life with the Cubs in a few short hours Tuesday. When the Cubs began practice in the morning, Aramis Ramirez pointed to a wrecked '95 Nissan Sentra near the Cubs bullpen and asked: "Hey 'Bussy,' what's your car doing on the ramp?" Buss looked over at the wreck and replied: "That's not my car." But then Buss did a double take. "Dude," he said to Ramirez. "That's my car!" Buss soon discovered his car was demolished beyond recognition, but this was no ordinary crime. The car windows all had been smashed in, the front, back and sides all were severely dented and the smoking guns a couple of baseball bats and balls were strategically placed in the windshield. "I figured (Jon) Lieber, (Kerry) Wood immediately, (Ryan) Dempster" he said. "Then I realized it was every pitcher we have." The Cubs players played dumb while Buss silently fumed and wondered how he was going to tell his wife, who was the actual owner of the car. "It's a shame," Lieber said with a straight face. "What kind of person would do something like that? It really just shocks me. I'm sure she'll understand." After the workout ended, Dempster told Buss to "quit pouting" and come with him to the weight room to "see something." As they walked out the back door, Buss saw several players and a 2008 Nissan Xterra parked in the walkway. Dempster gave him the keys for the new SUV, valued at about $25,000. -- Chicago Tribune

I believe that things of this nature happen across many professional sports.

The clubhouse guys and coaches that are low on the totem pole put in just as many hours or more than everyone else.

If they are liked the players will take care of them.

It was kind of nice also to see the Red Sox players stand up for their coaches to get them some additional pay for having to go to Japan.

Ryan Dempster is a great person.... and becoming a better pitcher too!

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Why should they make more money for that? They get a salary for the year to coach the Red Sox. The thought was good, but I didn't side with the coaches. And it's the Managers fault for telling them they were going to make more money when they actually weren't. He should've had to cough up the money.

Wouldn't you be a bit perturbed if your boss told you that you had to go overseas and be away from your family for x amount of time when it isn't in your normal job description to have to travel to that extent? I'd ask the boss for a stipend also. Not saying that the $40,000 that they each got was reasonable, just saying they should get SOMETHING over and above the salary agreed upon for their usual job duties.

They are away from their families the entire spring baseball and over 50% of a baseball season. It comes with job. And how long have they known they will be going to Japan? Who wouldn't want to go to Japan for free? I think it all boils down to is they were told they were getting money by someone that didn't have the say so. They've now just set a precedence for every other coach out there. They should feel lucky to have one of the greatest jobs in the world. Sometimes I wish someone would just tell the athletes/coaches of the world to stick it.

As I do agree with some of your post earlier. A small stipend, like a grand I can understand, but 40 freakin K?!?!?!

    Re: Those crazy Cubbies!

Some of those coaches and staff don't make a whole lot of money. The trip is not 'free'. The flight and lodging are but they still have to pay for their room in Sarasota, all their meals, transportation outside of too and from the park, phone calls, etertainment, etc. They are going to be there for two weeks and didn't have to go, MLB asked them too and said they would get this stipend if they did...

Sadly though he may be better than a lot of guys on the Cardinals staff going into the season! I'm cautiously optimistic about Dumpster but he has had a nice spring training so far.

Cards chances and their rotation sound a lot like the Cubs were a few years ago, just exchange the names Prior and Wood with Carpenter and Mulder.

    Go Cubs Go!
