    Paper versus plastic

The city council is considering banning the use of plastic bags in this area. The primary concern is that plastic goes to the landfill, it does not degrade, the plastic bags get blown around by the wind and sometimes ends up being eaten by wildlife causing problems for wildlife.

Here's another take on this issue:

here's another option.... get some cloth bags that can be reused over and over. Problem solved, but of course that is probably too wacko tree-huggerish for some folks.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Here's an idea: charge for the bags. Bring your own bags and you're not charged.

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

    Re: Paper versus plastic

I wish HyVee still offerred paper bags. I know they're not as good as cloth, but if there was still a choice between paper/plastic I'd take paper in a heartbeat.

I wish we would all switch to more environmentally friendly bags (cloth is even a stretch for me) but people are just too stubborn. Same reason why people refuse to conserve fuel when it's as expensive as it is.

Or why most parents use disposable diapers versus cloth diapers.

    Re: Paper versus plastic

Since when does Hyvee not have paper bags? I don't use them because they're annoying to carry, but I was fairly sure they still had them.

Because cloth diapers are a giant pain in the *** not to mention disgusting. All cloth diapers are good for is buffing my truck after a good waxing.

Festival Foods discounts your bill a nickel for each paper bag you bring back and reuse. It's not much, but I keep 2 or three of the bags folded up behind the seat of my truck for when I go shopping. We also have a couple of those cooler bags that we use for the cold items instead of the plastic store bags.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

Hy-Vee did that when I worked there in high school around 1990. Did it for paper or plastic I think.

I think hy-vee still has paper bags, you just have to ask for them. They don't ask you "paper or plastic" because so many people use plastic anymore.

I don't see what the big deal is. I always get the plastic bags and just store them. After a few months, I take all of them that I've collected and go out in my back yard and just burn them. Problem solved.

My wife uses those. Hyvee gives you $.05 for each bag you bring in each time you bring them. Pays for the cost of the bags, and they hold twice as much.
