    PC Cleaner

I have a friend that has to send his laptop somewhere to get worked on. He'd like to clean off all private data (e.g. - cookies, history, etc...). Any recommendations for a free tool?

It kinda depends on how much data you want to erase. If you want to reformat your hard drive Active Killdisk uses a 256 bit cypher to encrypt all data and leave your computer hard drive blank. If you just want to erase some files then you might have to decide if its worth going out to spend money on a high density eraser. You can find these at your local target or walmart. But this is a good idea because when you delete a file from your computer it really doesn't get deleted. The reference too that file does. With the right program any file that hasn't been overwritten can be read!

That looks like it erases the hard drive. He doesn't want that. It still needs to be usable.

    Has anyone heard of CCleaner?

I don't think it needs to be that complete. I'm guessing he has visited some "not work related" web sites and he doesn't want his employer to find out.

    Re: PC Cleaner

Darik's Boot and Nuke (Hard Drive Disk Wipe) - dban is a bootable disk image that will securely wipe your entire system.

Eraser - Free secure data erase tool to wipe files on your hard drive - I found this on the above page - it's a free windows utility to wipe the free areas of your hard drive.

If he just wanted to clear out private data, I would empty the IE temporary files, password area, and cookies (same for firefox) and delete the files under his documents folder and then empty the trash. That should get most everything. Then run the eraser from above on the newly freed space.

If he wanted to nuke the whole drive, go with dban.

    Re: PC Cleaner

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going with CCleaner and then Eraser.

I'd check with the service center and see if they are ok with me just taking the drive out and sending it that way. Many places are ok with that.
