What I would do next season

OK, time for a bit of sofa coaching from me. This is what I would do next season. For the first five or so games of the season (including the exhibitions) no 3-pointers would be allowed, at all. NONE, NADA, ZILCH. Any player who launched a 3 would be chewed out, and forced to run laps or something.

I think the 3 was our biggest problem this year. Take the following scenario: we're behind late in a game, and manage to claw our way back with determined defense. We hold the opponent scoreless for several possessions, but we now desperately need a basket ourselves to stay in the game. We get the ball to our end of the court, and one of our players launches a 3. It comes nowhere close to going in, and one of the opposing players gets the rebound. They get the ball to their end, and score, putting an end to our defensive run, and putting us down for good. We go on to lose the game by 10 or so.

I don't know how many times I saw that scenario play our this season, but it was a lot. We need to totally establish our inside game first next season, then get back to shooting the occasional 3 once we've done that. Besides, the first few games of the season are usually patsies anyway, and if we can't beat them without 3s, then we have major, major problems as a team.

Lucca and Eik should probably be allowed to. Haluska and Petey as well. I'd be down with no one else.

I have no problem with them shooting threes as long as it moves around a bit and a big guy gets to touch it. My only problem with the threes this year is that sometimes the shot selection was bad and guys would just jack it up with somebody right in their face and nobody with position down low.

We were an incredibly easy team to defend this year.

Mac's offense revolves a lot around the outside shot. What you should have said was Craig should not take an outside shot and work on his inside game. I still want Petey, Sean, Wesley, Lucca and Eik to shoot it if they're open.

I wouldn't do that in a million years. All facets of the game make for a good/great team. You don't ignore it.

You obviously don't know GMAC's coaching style if you think we will stop shooting the three. haha jk. The 3 is what his programs live and die by. Take a look at his previous offenses and the number of three balls were taken during games. Once we get some better SCHOLARSHIP players in that can shoot the rock (no offense to our guards now) we will light it up from deep.

Re: What I would do next season

I don't think the three point shot itself was the biggest problem. It was more the fact that everyone felt entilted to shoot at least 2 per game. When Jiri and Craig keep shooting 3's that would take away shots from guys that shot the ball much better such as Wes, Sean, and even Rahshon for the most part. I think we were also hurt by Wes' injury because he settled to often for jumpshots. Everyone just needs to know there role and we would be a lot better off.

We need the 3, or at least the threat of the 3, to run an efficient offense. I agree that Juri and Craig should have had a tighter leash.

FYI...Jiri had the best 3PT percentage this year. Everyone loves to dog on our best shooter for taking 3-point shots....

I really hope that's not true. No team has ever won the Big 12 title (and no team is ever going to win the Big 12 title) with an offense centered around jacking up three point shots on nearly every possession.

The upper tier Big 12 teams are loaded with athletic players. When athletic players are coached to play defense, they can usually contain outside shooters.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. JH was ISU's post. When he was out shooting 3's, a glaring rebounding vulnerability developed for ISU (due to injuries and CB just being young and not as muscular as his opponents). If you watch teams like KU, you gain an appreciation for the value of second-chance "points" (i.e. not only the points themselves, but the fouls drawn from opponents, as well the demoralizing psychological effect on the opponent).

Re: What I would do next season

People make it out like Jiri just hung out around the perimeter and jacked up 3-point shots.

Most of the 3's he shot were good looks. Jiri is far from a disciplined player - but he was far better this year in taking 3's - and again - he was our most accurate shooter from the outside (and inside). It would be foolish not to have your best shooter taking shots.

Seeing how Jiri lead the team in rebounding and was no slouch in Big 12 rebounding standings - I doubt he was the problem in our rebounding woes this season.
