    64/65 Play-In Game

How is Coppin State already in this game? I just saw it on the bottom line during the Kansas-Texas game.

I didn't think they announced those two teams until the Selection Show.

They interviewed the chairman of the selection committee on CBS and he announced that.

I'm sure the committee informed the school to prepare them for the Tuesday game.

They usually don't. In this case, I'm sure they have 20 good reasons to assume that Coppin State is the last seed.

But why inform one school and not announce the other one?

I think they have the game set, the other school probably knows too.

Just now, Greg Gumbel announced that Mt. St.Mary's will be the other team.

Why not do both at once? I don't know, unless they're just leaking information to keep people watching

I think pretty much everyone knew Coppin St. was going to be in the play-in game anyway...they made the tourney with 20 losses. There's no way they weren't going to be in the 64/65 game.

Apparently, they went 12-1 in their last 13 games to get this far. If I did the math right, at one point they were 4-19. And they still turned their season around.

    Re: 64/65 Play-In Game

I'm not a big fan of the play-in game, why do they have just one instead of four? And even though Coppin St. had 20 losses this season, I don't think an automatic bid should have to be in the play-in game.

I totally agree! The committee just doesn't seem to get that people watch the 1st weekend to see someone like SE Belmond St of Indiana, or whoever it might be.

Let the mediocre big conference teams that barely make it play off.

Yep, that's right. They were 4-19 and 0-8 in the MEAC conference before going 12-1 in their last 13, including four wins in the conference tournament.

A team finishing that strong shouldn't be in the play-in game.

Too bad my writing this won't change anything

It's not about TV ratings when they decide the seedings. The fact is that the team from Whoever-the-heck State or whoever it might be, is a weaker team than most of the teams that make it in from the major conferences. To get an at large bid, you have to be one of the best 34 teams in the country that didn't get an automatic bid. There's no way you can convince me that Coppin St. and Mount St. Mary's are in that category. This isn't to say there aren't good teams from small conferences. VCU comes to mind, particularly. But the two teams in the play-in game are supposed to be the two worst teams, regardless of how they got there.
