What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

    as a sideline guy?

I really love the way he tells it like it is. He is a real Clone fans and you can tell it is just killing him to watch the OL flounder out there. It is nice to have someone with a strong FB background to explain what is happening in the trenches. All I can see during games is Meyer running for his life and Stevie crashing into a pile for 2 yards.

Sometimes I wonder if he would concider being the replacement for BC.

Yeah, Ben's really good, until he blames the fans for a poor game.

Like CyCloned said, he tells it like it is. If the fans are sitting on their hands the whole game, he going to call them on it, just like he's going to say if the O line or anyone else isn't performing. I like his perspective a lot, honest, heartfelt, insightful and straight to the point.

I like Ben alot, but placing the blame for a loss on the fans was just wrong.

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

He was one of my offensive line coaches in high school, and he is just a tremendous guy. He has a great knowledge of the game, and I think he could be a great offensive line coach for Iowa State. He is a proven player in the trenches, and he knows what it takes to win. He is very straight-forward and tells you how it is, but he really does have a great knowledge of the game and Iowa State is lucky to have him.

I really enjoy Bruns' commentary. I think he's very insightful and brings humor too. The whole fans thing was wrong, but being down on the sidelines and being a former player I can see why he said it (although it wasn't right).

Burns kisses Mac's backside a little too much. He may blame Cotton, he's Mac's puppet.
If ISU does badly, it's the usual "the fans never showed up", "I can promose you coach Mac will be chewing the players butts," etc etc.

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

I can clearly recall Ben talking about being very unhappy with Mac and the Marty Fine hire. Something about being completely discussed with the OL situation, and was glad for the change to Cotton. I am sure he isn't real happy with Cotton now either, but Fine was a absolute disaster of a hire.

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

The blaming stuff on the fans thing was a hot topic.

He didn't understand student seating and had not been in a seat enough to understand the dynamics. Yet he put the onus on the fans for a contribution to a loss by the team on the field. He didn't really understand Cyclone Football from a fan's perspective.

I'm not sure he ever sat as a "fan", so I can understand his lack of knowledge. But putting him on the air to put his opinions out there was a blunder.

I think he paid for his error in judgement.

As a sideline reporter - I still trust him to give us the "vibe" during games.

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

I don't think he ever has "sat" as a fan - in 2001 & 2002 my season tickets were directly behind him (a half-dozen rows up in the west upper deck), and he NEVER sat down. He was very supportive of the team, yes, but it was rather irritating for my 5'3" 50+ year-old mom who couldn't see the field, regardless of whether she was sitting or standing. (Ben's a big guy.)

A few times, after some polite begging, he would sit down for halftime so we could watch the band march, etc...but that was about it.

I bet he's a lot happier roaming the sidelines....overall I think he does a good job as a sideline reporter.

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

Ben is a straight shooter which is great! I think he needs to be the offensive line coach effective immediately after this season at ISU. I think there are some attributes he can bring to the table that can turn that line quickly like his toughness, technique and attitude of either work hard my way or you are out!

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

Ben Bruns heart is in the right place, but there is an old adage that goes something like, Dont Blame The Customers. If your business is floundering you had better look in the mirror and take a close look at how you are doing business.

The same could be said about our football program. Dont blame the fans in the stands because the team either canNOT or willNOT block and tackle well enough to win games.

Ben calls it like it is. If the team is not performing - he'll say so. If the fans are sitting on their hands, he'll say that too.

I appreciate his love for the Cyclones and honesty. Ben's a great guy!

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

Ben rocks as a commentator. He says what he thinks and calls it as he sees it. Does that mean everyone will always agree with him...Re: fans etc, no, but you have to like a guy with courage to speak out.

Re: What does everyone think of Ben Bruns

I would like Ben to take over Eric Heft's color duties. In my view, Eric needs to stick to basketball and ISU needs a football guy in the booth.
